Off season upgrades, what say you.

Quick follow-up on upgrading from the SC5000 to the newer VesselView 7. Mercury customer support responded to my email inquiry within 1 hour of sending it to them....very impressive! They confirmed that going from a SC5000 to VesselView 7 (still available but no longer manufactured by Mercury due to new 700 series) is plug and play, and requires only the VV7 wiring harness and adapter cable. The newer 700 series VV's use NMEA2000 so you need extra hardware to do the network conversion. I was able to find a new VV7 with the latest SW for just under 1K vs. the >2K price for the newer series....that's a huge savings and leaves me with a great solution and some extra cash.

Just asking why to Garmin - I too prefer Garmin as being user friendly and great customer service but my local go to guy likes everything but Garmin - probably does not get as good a deal on Garmin is my thought and why three - one for GPS one for radar and one for engine gauges???? I was thinking of going for only two and a MFD.
I'm upgrading my electronics, going all Garmin this time and will have 3 8612xsv displays on my 40PC pics will follow

Why Garmin? Couple of reasons. 1) I had Simrad on the previous boat, and even though they are quality they were a bit user unfriendly (and I'm a techie). So I heard Garmin was better in that department.

2) Garmin is the hardware Formula uses for the Volvo IPS displays in the newer boats - doesn't mean a lot but I figured it Formula uses them they must be ok

Why 3? I was originally going with 2 but when we laid it out we discovered 3 would fit and I said "why not?" These days a lot of the higher end boats are using 3 (most of them bigger than 12) and I like the look of 3

Moving right along.....swapped the SC5000 with the VV7 (still need to configure a few things) and this week will be getting the SeatalkNg network mocked up at home with a pair of Raymarine i70s's and a Raymarine RS150 GPS.. The RS150 will be a dedicated GPS for the VV7 and i70s's and backup redundancy to the internal GPS in the Axiom 12RV. Also adding a complete AIS system, Quantum 2 Doppler radar and a lot more......stay tuned.

Also, I have a bunch of stuff for sale.....E80, Radar, SC5000 etc.....PM if interested.

Install a tethered kill switch, install 2 opening port lights in place of the stationary ones. Fix a split seam on the rear seat, move batteries from the bilge to under the rear seat. Transom trim switch and install this in place of the 260 carb. (5.7MPI)

oh yeah! Big time cool mods. I should go down to mine and post up a vid or 2 - you gave me some good ideas. We're both doing similar mods over the off season. But you have the totally awesome indoor storage facility {{{{{jealous}}}}}

Guys, kicking up the audio system a notch and replacing all of the JL Audio MX series speakers with the new M6 series. Also replacing the JL Audio 6X9's in the lower arch with the M6-880's. Check out the parts for sale section of the forum....I'm selling several pairs of speakers.

Engine maintenance begins..... all fuel injectors will be cleaned and I'm having fuel water separators installed.

The place I sent my injectors to recommended pulling the fuel damper and cleaning out the rails. He didn't fully mention that the o-ring is not available desperately from Merc, have to buy a whole dampener. So I flipped my finger to Merc and measured the o-ring, then purchased a few sizes to have find the right one.

Copy and paste from a post I made on this on another forum

For those that also want to not pay 140 dollars a piece when all you need is new o-rings: I used soft Viton Fluoroelastomer O-rings, Size Dash -118. 7/8"(0.862") ID, 1 1 /16"(1.068") OD, 3/36" (0.103") width. McMaster Part Number: 1284N147
This is the oring for mercruiser part number: 8M0046753
This size o-ring is not common in many kits, as we tried to find one locally available last Saturday to salvage the weekend. The common sizes are to thick to work and will not fit in.
Compared to the OEM o-ring using calibrated Mitutoyo calipers.

I'm sure you can use a high temp silicone o-ring also. Hopefully this saves you all some money.
Below this oring is a flat spacer o-ring, it should never go bad. Though it measures .0625 at it's thickest, 0.9" ID, and 1.03" OD. It's a hard plastic, and again doesn't seal just spaces the O-ring out from the top of the dampener.
Below are the o-ring properties

Viton? temperature rating

Depending on the grade the working temperature range is considered to be -26?C to +205?/230?C (-15?F to +400?/440?F). But for short working periods it will take even higher temperatures.Chemical resistance/applications

Fluorocarbon elastomers are highly fluorinated carbon-based polymers used in applications to resist harsh chemical and ozone attack. Fluorocarbon O-rings should be considered for use in aircraft, automobile and other mechanical devices requiring maximum resistance to elevated temperatures and to many fluids. FPM (FKM, Viton?, Fluorel?, Technoflon, Dai-El) resist:
  • mineral oils and greases,
  • aliphatic,
  • aromatic and also special chlorinated hydrocarbons,
  • petrol,
  • diesel fuels,
  • silicone oils and greases
  • high vacuum

Upgrading all JL Audio MX series speakers in the cockpit with the new M6 series. Biggest improvement should be going from the 6X9's in lower arch to the M6 880's. Look at these beasts!!!
