looken to buy 41 pc, have a cople of questions

Divergirl here...I have a 2002 41 PC with 480 Volvo Pentas. Cruise at 28-30. Second owner of this boat and have owned it since 2004.

Botjem thank you for giving me a heads up knot ten. I don't mind the 41 in jersey It has caught my eye. Although I am not a fan of the way the hard top looks, but the one in Florida might be abetter bang for the buck over the 41 pc in Jersey. I still am not ruling out the one in ky(looks kinda like a project boat but it is close to me). But kinda leaning towards the one in Florida. Divergril dose your boat have the 5 blade props or 4 blade. Botjem, Divergril how do you like the volvo's tamd edc's.
Thanks,Chris

I have the 5 blade props. Engines are very powerful and VPs are great engines. There was a safety recall, years ago, on the TAMD74s (I have TAMD74 P-B) which required a wiring harness for most. VP customer service was excellent as I continued to have the "safety issue" problem (SB jumped into high gear in neutral & idle) so they replaced the potentiometer, redid the wiring harness and replaced the SB computer, on their dime. I have to watch what I am doing in the ICW because of the 5 blade props and the hull configuration....together they cause a big wake so sometimes I have to run with one engine...also as I leave my dock to get to the ICW to get to the inlet out, which is a few minutes from me. I believe the engines I have was an upgrade (I am the 2nd owner) and the most power available for the 41 PC. I have not had one technician/mechanic on my boat who has not said "these are great engines".

Thanks Divergirl for the info on your boat. I will have to admit I am a die hard Cummins fan (worked on the 5.9/6.7 B series for 6-8 years before I started working an aircraft, mainly A320's) I have herd and read about the electrical problems that affected the V.P.'s EDC's. Good to hear that V.P. customer service was good to you, I have heard and read that V.P.'s C.S. has not been good to other people I guess its hit or miss lol. I was kinda hoping V.P. had the problem figured out buy the time your boat was made. It seems like the problems have been going since 1999. I hope no more issues scene they did all the wiring harness and ecm.
Thanks,Chris

The SB still hiccups every once in a while. I went up to Sailfish Marina in Palm Beach, Singer Island last weekend and I noticed that the engines did not seem to be running in synch as the SB RPMs were a tad lower than Port. On the way back, SB "burped" and ran the same RPMs as Port and ran like a champ all the way back. I will appreciate any words of advice you can offer. I can say that SB is not jumping into high gear while in neutral or idle any longer however, this problem was intermittent at best from the get go. It would do "it" maybe 3 times on 3 outings and then nada for 1 year...then do it again. It really has been quite crazy. I should tell you that most everything on my boat is new: gen has been rebuilt; both turbo chargers replaced; port tranny removed and rebuilt; electrical system replaced; engine room fire extinguisher system replaced; sure I am missing a bunch, and I am the 2nd owner and have owned Divergirl for 14 years. When she is running at her best she is incredible!

Wow Divergirl you have rilly put in a lot of work on the boat. Have you had any issues with the port engine at all since you have owned it?
Thanks,Chris

I have 5 Blade wheels and does it dig in, if anyone is on swim platform, i warn them to hold on. Also regarding the Florida 41, I took a closer look and WOW, lots of great updates. Also with Knot Ten just make sure everything is written down, It almost cost me 5K not to buy a boat. They are nice enough but on closer questioning, if I gave them a deposit for a sea trial and just did not like the way it performed, and there was nothing wrong with boat, they keep the deposit and I would be responsible for launching and hauling and other fees. Regarding the Volvo's, just not many choices for repairs, I had some work done by whom was recommended and the way they wired my Nema 2000 backbone, left a sour taste and still owe them money after I had to correct their connections. I do not cruise as fast as DiverGirl - I cruise at 1800 to 2000 RPM and am running 18 to 20 MPH and fuel consumption is great - but keep in mind I fill up whenever i go below 1/2 tank and just divide gallons by hours and can easily go 15 hours with over 1/4 tank left then but again that is an average. As I said before everyone that goes for a ride is in AWE - but we are a Blue Collar Yacht Club. Also I have Bow and Stern Thrusters and the delay in response due to drive by wire I feel it helps alot. Just don't wander away from Formula you will not be disappointed.

Botjem did you add the bow/stern thrusters, how often do you use the stern thruster. I would like to have a bow thruster on my next boat purchase if possible for the ease of docking. My previous 40 foot (w/gas engines) did not have a bow thruster and let me tell ya, when the wind is blowing that boat was not fun at all to back in my slip or to pull into the fuel dock. I am not sure I rilly need a stern thruster. Btw what do you think about this 41 pc https://www.globaloneyachts.com/boats-for-sale/1999-formula-41-pc-massapequa-new-york-6813763/. I just happen to stumble across it. I was wondering if you know what part of New York this boat is at.
Thanks,Chris

If you’ve never Dock’s with diesels it will blow you away how the props bite!!!
The only issue with the 41 is the prop recess in the hull. Reverse has a tendacy to have some of the thrust deflected downward but it’s easy to adjust. A lot of times I’ll be in reverse with one and in and out of forward with the other to initially get the reaction needed. 23 inch diameter props really react.

Thrusters? And that is why I am the great girl docker that I am! No thrusters here....all talent!

And no, I have had no port engine problems. The port tranny was the problem and was rebuilt but, KNOCK WOOD....port all good.

Evermore I have never docked with diesel's, soot I have never been on a curiser that had diesel's for power plants lol, but I have been told that going from a gas twin engine to a boat with diesel's (same size boat) is quite a learning experience. and most captions prefer the diesels over gas because of how more responsive the diesels are when going in and out of gear. Divergirl how many hours did the port trans have on it before it had to be overhauled. Evermore/Divergirl how do your boats handle in the wind when backing into the slip, do you think a bow thruster would be rilly worth installing. Botjem I ask the same question to you as well Do you think a bow thuster would be worth installing?
Thanks,Chris

There’s a learning curve and learning to use the wind rather than fight it is a better way to approach handling a boat. I was lucky to have very experienced boaters give me great tips on handling wind and current. Adjusting to the diesels is really quick. The biggest secret is in and out of gear for control. My gas boats were fairly slow reacting so it was ok to leave in gear for docking. Ours does 5.7 knots at idle. First time down the fairway people were yelling to slow down. After dock walked out and apologized the told them it was at idle. They were amazed. We have become very good friends on the dock. Just informing them was enough. I’ve never felt the need to have a thruster, but different strokes.

Need to keep this short so am going to send in short bursts, I too idle at a higher than desired speed and usually only come in on one.

Soot is annoying just ry to handle it when you first come and it is a reminder to throttle down alone click at a time.

Learning curve is quick, the delay in shifting was my biggest problem but now I use it to my advantage. And remember the wind is your friend, work with it even if it means backing down and trying again.

Evermore on my avanti It dose seem like there is a slight delay when you put it in gear (forward and reverse) I mean it goes in gear wright away but takes a sec or two for the props to grab. I guess with the diesel is pretty instant. Evermore/ Botjem I have came a long way sense I bout my first twin engine boat and man let me tell you, that was quite an learning experience lol I have gotten a whole let better but still not perfect as I am still trying to do a better job using the wind to my advantage.
Thanks,Chris.

Mopar, just looked at it. It's out on Long island, South Shore, lots of canals out there and they usually keep them behind their houses. She looks good, cushions look redone, has the cummins, hours are right, definitely worth a look. But I really like that one in Florida.
