Hi all new guy here. I am looken to purchase a 41 pc. Currently looken at this one: https://www.boattrader.com/listing/...cruiser-103368522/?refSource=standard listing. what do you all think about it, looken at the pictures of the engines I don't think that they are 450's but more than likely 420's jugging by the NIPPONDENSO injection pumps on the engines. So how much slower are the cummins 420's(3 blade props) vs the 450's and what is the fuel burn on the 420's. I tried searching but i cant find much info on the cummins 420's just the 450's any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Chris

BTW has any one had a the opportunity to ride or sea trial 41 pc's with both 420's and 450's if so did you notice any difference between the two engines as far as plain time and cruse speed.
Thanks, Chris

We have a very early 41 with the Denso pump and it's a Diamond. Looks like it's 420 brake horsepower which would be 450 rated. Our survey says 450 but the ratings from the Cummins sheet is 420. The difference is flywheel without accessories vs everything working. I have a pdf of the rating sheet but it's too big to upload. If you PM me an email address I can forward it to you. It's my understanding you can switch to the newer 5 blade props if you wish. Never did it personally so can't swear to it. We have a small amount of cavitation getting on plane, the 5 blades probably takes care of that.

We really like our 41. Handles and rides great.

Thank you Evermore. If you don't mind me asking but what is your cruising speed@ given rpm and what is your top speed@giving rpm?
thanks, Chris

My pumps are not correctly set up. They were set as an on road engine and they only turn 2200 at high idle (no load) but turn 2200 loaded and we do about 27 knots. When I finally set them up it should be about 5-8 knots faster. Really never cared as I don't cruise above 2200 anyway. That's 80% of rated which is the sweet spot for the most efficient rpm anyway.

Evermore are your ip's ag gov or auto gov. It sounds like they may be auto style governor assy. I am just curious do you know anyone that has a similar boat to yours but with the 450's in it I wonder how much difference is there rilly between the 420's and the 450's.
thanks,chris

I'll have to go pull numbers and check-probably take a few days. Engines are the same basic design. Horse power is all number equations based on 5252 rpm's. Same torque but higher rpm's equal higher horsepower up until you pass 5252 rpm's. Torque is the magic number and the diesels make torque way below that rpm so it's deceptive. The same diesel turning 2100 will have a much lower HP reading than at 2700.

Ya I was wondering if you had the auto style gov how the engines acted when starting an idling in gear. Thanks for helping me out. Btw did you get a chance to click on the link i posted about that 41 pc in ky, if so what did you think about it.
thanks, chris

Be careful with this. Didn’t think the cherry cabinets were available in 97. Same boat as ours and we really like it. Electronics are dated. Price is ok. Make sure you get a good survey and oil analysis done. Looks like a fair amount of maintenance done on motors. Get receipts. Ours starts and idles great. 5.7 knots at idle I was used to 671 Detroit’s prior to this.

Thank you evermore for your help, so you boat is a 97 as well and has the 3 blade props. Does your boat have an engine sync gauge?
thanks,chris

Redid the dash, no sync. Ours has the Glendenning engine synchronizer so don't even think about having one. My son has a fabrication business with a water jet cutter so he made me new dash pieces. Painted them a gloss after having them color shot with a camera.
Yes it's a sister boat, the same colors except the interior cabinets. 1997 with the Cummins. 3 blade props.
My list in the last three years of repairs is extensive, but I'm picky and turned wrenches for 30 years. Wait until you throw it into a turn, absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!

Ya I would like to see your dash.(my dad's buddy has a water jet). I noticed that the 97 that i am interested in dose not have an engine sync gauge. I will have to do some research on the glendenning engine synchronizer as i do not know much about it.
Thanks,Chris

I have Volvo 480's with 5 Blades and have experienced cavitation. OBTW Charlie they sent a second display - So that's 3, something about a micro chip at the factory level. Still need to send the second one back.

And Moparcrazzy - You are making a GREAT choice. Anyone i take for a ride is awed by the way she performs - They stay the Formula has a WOW Factor. They also made a 48PC i think for 3 years but the price is way out of my league.

Where are you located Mopar? Do a search on Yachtworld it changes frequently. A 2004 with Cummins is awesome and the last year she was made I think. There is a 41 PC in Northern Jersey that is in BracKish water that is worth a look.

Botjem I am in Kentucky and boat in KY(lake Cumberland) I think this is the 41 pc in NJ you are talking about https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/20...tates?refSource=standard listing#.W3jP3MJryJA also got my eye in this one as well http://fyiyachts.com/fyi_vessel/2000-41-formula-2/ the hard top on this boat kinda ruins it and both are a little out of my price range but you never know I am also thinking about regal commodore's 402's and 4160's But leaning more towards the 41 pc but you never know. Evermore you are absolutely right so you never know.
Thanks, Chris

I also was looking at a Regal and a Surveyor friend of mind told me to stay away, even though great price with new engines but Galley cabinets were delaminating and after research, that was a common problem. NO COMPARISON between Regal and Formula. It may be prettier but that is it, you get what you pay for.

Yes I also was trying to see the New Jersey Formula and Knot Ten would not accommodate me with Appointment so I went to see it on my own since I was in Atlantic City anyway and I could not get into the Yard. Just watch your wallet with Knot 10.

Like the one in Florida, lots of upgrades, some that I would like to do. I sort of like the hard top only problem I see is what happened to Arch Speakers, minor issue, they probably moved them. I am Not a Fan of Canvas.
