Winter projects

the forum seems to have been a little on the slow side lately so i thought i might post some info on my winter projects just for something to do and maybe even for your reading pleasure. advice, thoughts, heckling and verbal abuse are all welcome and appreciated. now that i have the boat looking like a complete disaster area with the transom shower, ice maker, and part of the dash removed as well as a 12" X 15" hole cut out beside the helm seat (this will be for a sub) i'm gonna be trying to tackle these projects one at a time OR as i find sweet deals on needed parts. nothing like having absolutely no direction or plan and following it to a "T" 8)

so first i wanted to get everything done that has to do with the dash, mainly replacing my switch actuators and re-wiring so that my arch lights, bilge lights and outside courtesy lights work individually instead of collectively. check those 2 items off the list, they are done.

while the dash was out i wanted to install my Kenwood wired remote too. check that one off too.

i need to pull the instrument cluster panel loose so i can do some further checking on my starboard fuel gauge. it doesn't work so i have some tests to run to see if i can figure out what's up. i'll report back on what i find.

right now i'm in the process of replacing all three bilge blowers. access to these is kinda tough but i'm hoping to be completed with them by the end of this week. i'll keep yuns updated on that as well.

thats all i got for now. if i get to the boat this evening maybe i'll have something else for tomorrow. :)

WINTER PROJECTS. YEAH, I GOT A FEW BREWING. CHANGING THE FUEL LINES TO THE ENGINES. I INSTALLED IN LINE FILTERS FOR THE FUEL MANAGEMENT SENSORS AND WERE NEVER HAPPY WITH THEM. THEY ARE STEEL AND RUST. ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE THEY DID NOT BELONG THERE. I AM CONVERTING TO SPIN ON'S MOUNTED ON THE STRINGERS.
LOOKING INTO COCKPIT LED LIGHTING. LOVE THE TRI-COLORED ONES ON THE 45. STILL INVESTIGATING.
JUST CHANGED BOTH OUTDRIVES FROM OCEAN SERIES TO OCEAN X DRIVES. HAD TO REMOVE SOME BOTTOM PAINT AROUND THE TRANSOM ASSEMBLIES, AS THE NEW DRIVES ARE BIGGER. I HAVE TO RE-APPLY INTERLUX BARRIER COTE, AND RE-DO THE PAINT TO WHERE IT IS ABOUT AN INCH AWAY FROM THE HOUSINGS. MY BOTTOM PAINT IS SEVEN SEASONS OLD, AND STILL LOOKS GREAT. LOVE THAT VC-17.
INVESTIGATING HARDWOOD FLOORING IN THE CABIN. STILL NOT SURE IF THIS IS WHAT I WANT, BUT WILL LOOK INTO OPTIONS. ADMIRAL LIKES THE WOOD, I LIKE CARPET.
NORMAL STUFF LIKE IMPELLER CHANGES, FUEL FILTERS, ETC. OIL CHANGES ARE COMPLETE, AND SO IS THE DRIVE LUBE.
ALREADY CHANGED ALL SPARK PLUGS, WHEN ENGINES WERE OUT OF THE BOAT. OVER 500 HOURS ON THE PLATINUM PLUGS, AND STILL WERE OK.
I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED.

i'd like to hear more about the hardwood flooring when/if you decide to do it. also, why the drive change? i assume you had to pull motors and replace the transom assemblies too?

i got one more of my blowers installed last night so 2 down and 1 to go. it takes me about 1.5 hours to get one done from start to finish. i'm gonna try that Fusion paint on my yellowed out transom shower in the next day or two, that way when the blower install is complete i can button all that back up and be done with it. another notch in my winter project belt :)

it'll be raining here for the next day or so and i don't have the last blower yet so i'll be starting on the wood work for my custom speaker and sub mounts this evening. i'll also be recovering all the trim pieces so that everything will match. does anybody know what type of material i should be looking for?

Yes, motors were removed to do the installation. Ocean series were damaged and in need of replacement.

Gsent,

You were the one who gave me faith in the Ocean Series drive, now I see you needed to change them, make me nervous.

forgot to bring wood home this evening so no wood working tonight :( :( oh well, looks like a nice relaxing evening watching it rain........

I need my own thread, but mine sounds like yours. My dash is completely taken apart and sending tomorrow to have a custom dash built.

Well, I am about to undertake an aftermarket bowthruster installation in the next day or so. Will also be replacing my mph gauge which is useless to me and replacing with a raymarine rudder indicator so I know my drive positions for docking. Only spot it would fit and have gps for speed anyhow. Will be doing the usual bottom paint, drive paint and service, and anodes during haulout for thruster, followed by oil and filter changes. Will also likely install new inverter/charger before the spring. Would also, if time and money permits, love to install some led strip lighting behind port and starboard valance in v-berth with remote-control dimmer/on-off for better mood lighting. I really wish they made some kind of nice 12v dimmer switch for led lighting that looked as nice as factory switches!!! I would love to have all cabin lighting dimmable but so far all I've seen are ugly rotary knobs and such!! Certainly nothing that I would want to put in that's for sure!! That should be nearly the end of the wish list for now!! I guess nearly 25K in upgrades since last spring should do it before the wife is ready to kill me!! :)

JayW - what is involved with your rudder indicator. This is something that would really help me.

Do you have a parts list or site I could review...everytime I've checked into this before, the local dealers told me I need a auto pilot to get this feature ?

I am really confused, why do you need a rudder indicator on i/o's?
Don't you turn and point them when going in reverse?

Jay W. do happen to have smartcraft on your boat? If you do there is a display screen option in there that will show you the i/o angle.

Because I want one 8)

Honestly, at times when I a backing down I really would like to know the position of my rudders...

I have such a cross wind normally when docking that every little thing helps....quite often I "forget" exactly where my rudders are, I goose it and opps..wrong way.

I have the same boat basically and smartcraft, but no i/o angle. I keep being told I need auto pilot to get that, thus my question.

I have the rudder indicator displayed on my vessel view. I do not have auto pilot set up yet. Having that done over the winter with skyhook. I have to admit, the rudder indicator is awesome around docks especially when you have virtual steering like me. Without it, I would have no idea where the drives are.

If you have smartcraft SC5000 with the display on the dash I belive it is on the steering set of display screens you have the I/O angle position as part of the smartcraft package.

Just curious with the axius system since the I/O's can move independantly of each other does your display show seperate views one for each I/O position ???

The drives do not move independently of each other unless your using Axius. So, when your using the sticks and steering well, the screen shows you where your drives are and the angle. When using Axius there is no need to look at indicator because you are twisting a knob and boat does its magic. To be honest, I always have the screen up that shows battery voltage while using Axius. Never had the steering screen up.

Ah, perhaps that is my problem, I do not have the SC5000, i hvae a smaller simply display with no rudder or i/o position.
