Hello everyone,

my first post here. I'm looking into buying a 2005 SS 280. I have a house on a lagoon in Beach Haven West and would mostly be using the Barnegat Bay. A couple of questions:

- do you recommend this type of boat for this area?
- do i need to get lifts or can i keep in the water during the season?
- is the draft ok for these waters?
- can we take this boat to some of the sand bars?
- any other advice?

my time owning a boat. My good friend (machine pirate) is advising me that I should start out at this size...

Thanks.

For sure

I think that size boat would be excellent and easy to operate. If the boat feels a little to big at first you picked the perfect size.

- should be fine for the area. I would even look at the 310 because there's not much difference.
-if the boat you buy doesn't have bottom paint keeping it on a lift prevents you from having to paint it. If it is already painted sitting in during the season is no biggie. You should just scrub whenever you are hanging at the sand bar or tices.
-sure why not? Inboard/outboards go up and down for a reason!
-have fun and keep in touch with us we frequently get together in the same area.

Thank you. I will definitely join the fb page.
Any recommendations on Marina for service/storage in the Beach Haven/ LBI area? thanks.

Contact Sue at Shelter Harbor Marina. Excellent facility near the heart of Beach Haven. Contact her soon because they fill up quick!!! There are 2 members on here with a 48 Yacht and 40 PC that slip there.

Thanks. Will do. I don't need a slip. Just service and offseason storage. In season I will dock it in back of the house on the lagoon

I don't think Shelter Harbor offers that. I am not too sure about who to refer for storage and service on the island. I would probably contact the guys up at Comstock. It is a little bit aways but they are our local full service Formula dealership.

Be VERY careful if the drives are the Composite XDP Volvo Drives. Volvo has discontinued the drives due to their poor performance/multiple law suits and will no longer make parts for them. It has gotten so bad, that Volvo is currently offering a 40% discount on the "new" Volvo Drives that will replace the existing XDP Drives.....

As the owner of a 2007 31 PC with the XDP drives, I have had multiple problems with them and as such, am in the process of replacing them with the "new" Volvo Drives.

Keep in mind, "if" the 2005 with Volvo Pentas has the XDP Drives not only will you most likely have challenges, but the value of the boat if you try to sell it with the "discontinued" XDP drives will be considerably lower.

IMHO, I would NOT purchase the boat if it had the XDP Drives or I would negotiate the seller off of his price to pay for the "new" replacement drives.

Thanks for for the heads up. This is the model:
2005 Formula 280 SS - Powered By Twin Volvo 5.7 Gxi DP - 320 HP Each

is that the same drives ?

No, it is not. Unforgettable is 100 percent correct. XDP drives are black in color and made of plastic. GXI are aluminum.

Tomorrow is a big day for me. I'm going up to Boston to close the deal on a 2005 280ss. Dual pentas 5.7bwith only 95 hours! A big thank you to my buddy machine pirate on leading the negotiatons. He played the good cop!

i will send some pics after the closing. I'm looking forward to contributing to this forum.
