Darn, I thought I was finally gonna get to use my Moderator tools and actions.  Got all excited for nothn'
Thought I was gonna have to jump in there.

I wish I could join you for that beer ;D
WHEW..!! Got back on subject just in time! ::) That beer does sound pretty good.

I was told that Lucas motto was "A good days work and home before dark". Ran had 3 Triumphs. First one was a 1954 TR-2 and the last was TR-4A with independent rear suspension. Next sports car after that was a Datsun 240Z. Man, what a difference.
I had a TR6, and then a 280Zx. My TR6 is still my favorite car I ever owned, I just loved it. I sold it when I had to weld the frame the second time it rusted completely though. Although I loved the TR6, the 280Z was twice the car my TR6 was. It was much faster, and ran like it was on rails. It was four years old when I bought it, and it was still so tight, it would make your ears pop when you closed the doors. The ex wife got the 280. :'(

Now, back to the subject at hand. Cal, where did you hear about points making more hp until 5000 rpm? I know with an electronic ignition, I'm running a 60,000 volt coil, which enables me to open the plug gap .10, which should give a hotter spark, and a cleaner burn.

Cuda, he and I decided to respectfully dissagree and leave it at that. Although for what its worth, in my opinion, You are right in that a more powerfull ignition system will allow you to open the gap, effectively making a hotter spark. You can go too far though.. At a certain point you can get the plug electrode so hot it will retain enough heat to preignite the next combustion cycle making it ping or spark knock. The only way to really know where that is, is to experiment with diferent gaps. Because every engine will be able to handle a differing amount of gap. Due to alot of different things, intake swirl, head material, compression etc. And if you really want to go all the way, different cylinders in the same engine can handle different amounts of gap. Also indexing your plugs can gelp you be able to run a bigger gap/hotter spark.

I wasn't doubting Cal, I've known him on boating boards for over five years. I was just truly interested if I could read about it.

That's why I like my boat. It's got a 350 4 bolt main block, cammed, World Sportsman two heads, Holley high rise manifold and Edelbrock carb. I'm putting an EMI exhaust on it now hoping to let it breathe a little better. It ain't no ball of fire, but it sure has been fun to play with. Sometime I may take it out 383 cubes, right now I'm not in a hurry to do it. I think I'll kick back and enjoy it for a while.
What kind of speed are you getting out of this set up?

62.7 mph on the gps the last time out. That's with a Laser II 19p prop and at 5200 rpm +/-. Gear ratio is 1.32.

I've got a 19p Mirage+ that I had been running, but above about 52mph it starts making the stern light and getting some chine walk. This was with the drive trimmed fully out. I could trim down and stop it and also lose some speed. After I get my drive back together I'll probably get in touch with Throtte Up and see if they can help me with a prop.

Did I miss something here other than MSD is supposed to be Gods gift to ignition systems ::) ::)?

I had two 280ZX, one was a '79 and the other was a '83 turbo car. Both had 5 speed trannies. My altime favorite car that I had was a 1987 Toyota Supra Turbo. Now that was a fun car to drive. It was heavy, but when it was at speed you would never know it. It was very nicely balanced.

I don't know anything about MSD, I'm still trying to figure out the TB V I put in the Donzi. :(

Wow.......
I just boned up on this thread. Hated that I missed out on all this dialogue. I'm supposed to be writting a book report now but I got distracted checking out another thread.
I don't have enough time to say everything but MSD is "Gods gift to Ignition" no doubt about that. I have some war stories of my own how I thought an MSD was causing a problem in a car with N.O.S. supercharger, "F" body ECM and a Hypertech chip. Was loosing money, pulling my hair out and getting frustrated when I learned that the erratic MSD responses were coming from another part, namely a vaguely heated plug wire. There is a lot I know about MSD.
I read threads on OSO claiming problems from MSD on the water. Some were not using sealed systems and some said that they were. That is the firs time I've heard some of the things guys were saying. Shock loading was claimed to damage the MSD but I would be a servere skeptic. The shock load that results from tire shake on a Top Fuel Dragster is far greater than that of a race boat and the MSD is not damaged from a single pass of shaking. The driver might be though. The main difference in Ignition systems is digital control vs analog control. Mallory (and Crane i think) are digital systems and MSD is analog. That is another argument too, kind of like hp vs torque.

I would say that if a specific ignition sys it working fine in a boat then stay with it. The gains of changing ignition is of little consequence unless there is enough power change to warrant a different ignition control. When enough power change is made for ignition modification then curve, rpm, gearing or proping, Kv power, plug gap and air speed through the chambers and valves are all qualifying criteria for optimal performance.
The plug gap can be too wide and air velocity can blow the spark out  That is another war story for another time. I have paid well for all my hard earned lessons.

Ok back to my book report  8) ;D
