45Y stereo upgrade

just wrapping up a new stereo install in my '08 45. really wanted some of the cool features available in the new electronics, and just a nice bump in sound quality. that, and i'm working on a swap for the navigation electronics, so integration there was also a driver...but in reality, i just like new toys. :) oh, and there were a bunch of ground noises coming through the system, and i really wanted to get rid of them.

my stock system had 4 6.5" speakers in the roof, and 2 in the arch. each of which also had a tweeter separately mounted. it also had a 10" dual voicecoil sub under the co-captain's seat. Kenwood all around including in-dash CD player, CD changer in the salon, Sirius/XM and iPod dock powered by 2 Kenwood amps, 1 six channel for the 6.5" speakers, and a small 2 channel for the sub.

since i am going with Garmin MFD's, i started with the Fusion head unit since it integrates so nicely with the MFD. but to yank the original head unit, i'd lose CH changer, Sirius and remote iPod mount/jack. at the same time, i just realized how much i had been paying for Sirius/XM, and that I could get most of their stations for free using the iHeartRadio app. so, the head unit and all the peripherals were out.

I settled on a Fusion UD750 because it gave me Zone control, and i've always wished i could lower the volume on the arch speakers (they point right in your ears) if we were hanging in the aft seats at the table, and I wanted to add speakers to the stern for when we're hanging in the water. i would need to be able to disable the stern. finally, you can tie a zone to the Bose unit in the salon which allows us to have the same music everywhere if we want. also, the remote control functions from Fusion-Link via iPad/smartphone was a big plus...and you can stream Pandora/iHeartRadio/GooglePlay via Bluetooth.

initially i looked at Fusion amps/speakers, but i found that people seriously recommended WetSounds. i went with 6 XS-650's in the stock locations, and a pair of XS-650RGB in the stern. i wanted the blue-lit speakers in the stern to match the courtesy lights and my boat name. since i had tweeter holes already drilled in the hardtop/arch, i filled them with JL Audio M100-CT-SG-TB tweeters. switched the subwoofer for a true free air sub the XS-10FA, and powered it all with two Sinister SD4's.

needless to say, nothing went easy, and almost everything required drilling, cutting or some other customization. that being said, it sounds awesome and looks even better! so much more clarity and the bass is amazing. don't think we could possibly sit inside the cockpit and crank it all the way to 11. :) but, i'm a big believer that volume is a lot like horsepower...better to have more than you need, then need more than you have. :D also, i got to remove a lot of gear which is always nice.

with regards to ground noise. one thing i've always believed in is a dedicated ground wire to the amps/head unit, so i ran a ground from the house batteries to the amps. amazingly enough, this didn't do the trick. come to find out, Formula uses a common wiring harness for all of the wires. this means that the speaker wires ran from the amps on the starboard side behind the couch, under the floor to the port, and up the compartment behind all of the breakers! they then ran back to the starboard behind the dash, and then on to their speakers. so, if you used the fresh water, turned on the LED's, or really anything, the noise was there. and it was much louder when i finished the upgrade because i basically quadrupled the wattage in my system. so, i had to run all new speaker wires for the entire system. bingo, no more noise.

so, now i can stream from any bluetooth enable device, i added a WiFi router to get the head unit online, and now i can control it via a dedicated iPad that stays on the boat. wrapped the iPad in Lifeproof gear and it's a floating remote. :) once i get the Garmin's installed, they'll serve as remotes as well. i have yet to add the Fusion remote MS-NRX200i which is mounted in the salon because it'll be powered by the Garmin N2k network. but when i do, it will also give me N2k data like speed, depth, or really anything i want to see down below. pretty slick. pretty curious to see whether the Fusion Link app on the iPad will also give me the N2k data. we boat in skinny water, so watching the depth change with tides is a bit of a hobby. :)

here come the pics...let me know if you have any q's!

here's the Fusion UD-750. two things not shown here. the unit wasn't quite as wide as the stock Kenwood, so i had to add a filler bracket to cover the slight bit of the mounting holes that i could see. also, i added a secondary USB adapter just below the AUX input to the right of the radio.

stern speakers, the XS-650RGB's...had to make a template and took me 4 hours because cutting holes in perfectly good fiberglass scares the begeezus outta me...

amp install...nice amps. run super cool, and seem to use less power than the old ones even if they're much higher wattage. had to make a new mounting panel because they're a bit larger than the old one. last pic shows the new power distribution which has the new ground wire...also just barely visible on the left hand side of that pic is the new WiFi router.

Looks great. Nice choices....worth the hard work im sure!

I was going to do the transom speakers this season on my PC but chickened out! Cutting those holes were giving me nightmares. But your install looks nice and clean.

thanks guys! yeah, i'm loving the look. the JL tweets definitely add to it, and they scream on top of that. :)

jt...don't blame ya! like i said i spent most of a day working on that. i ended up making a template out of the speaker box for the starboard side, and flipping it over to cut out the second hole. as my bud FormulaTenn says...i then measured 50 times and cut once. ;)

good thing you followed my advice, it probably woulda liked like s*$t if you hadn't. but since you did, it looks AWESOME!! looking at the pics, those 6.5s look tiny on that huge transom. love the way you thought it all through before you started, always the best idea IMO.

hey, i know sage advice when i hear it! ;) there was lots of tape some cardboard, or a speaker grill to the transom...walk 15 feet away and stare at it. move it an inch and repeat, repeat, repeat! that first drill hole sucks. :D

Looks good, those transom holes are scary... On a side note I think I blew up the 2 808's on my transom yesterday... I'll know for sure in a while, I wonder if Wetsounds will cover them under warranty???

thanks a bunch! sounds like you know what i wen through. from what i've heard WetSounds is awesome about warranty coverage. even when a buddy of mine put WAY too much wattage to a pair and toasted them, they covered it. good luck...hope it's not as bad as you think...

Wet sounds just sent me a brand new set of 808's that showed up yesterday. What an awesome company. I can't even imagine what I would have to go through if I blew a set of JL's or any other brand. I'm guessing weeks of waiting (best case). Less than a week for wetsounds. I'll be a customer for life...

that's awesome!! glad to hear they took care of ya. definitely a sign of a good company that you don't see very often any more. now it's time to turn down the gain. ;)

loving it! every time i look at another boat, that's the first thing i think about replacing. ;) i love the extra zones, being able to turn the transom on/off...all of the inputs...it's incredibly easy to use too. i'm sold on it for sure...

Awesome Job Twarble! Very impressed.

I'm coming from a system I upgraded to 8 Wet Sounds 6.5's 2 Wet Sounds 12" Subs with 2 1600 watt fusion amps and a 1200 watt Fusion amps for the subs, and will be going to a stock Formula set up and will be chewing a knuckle with what it will be.

Is there anything you'd do different if you had to do it over?

i think if you wanted to, you could go with more power to the subwoofer, just depends on how much you want to rock the dock. my admiral wouldn't be too happy with that though...and it's plenty in all honesty as it is.

i probably wouldn't have bothered with the LED backlit 6.5s on the transom. they look really cool, but i had one go out on me and getting that swapped was a pain. so, i would do non-LED speakers back there. i still think about creating an enclosure for those speakers because it would make the bass that much better. but where they're installed it would be a real pain to install something...maybe a future project.

also, i've noticed the newer Formula's use HDMI to the TV in the cockpit...if you had one with HDMI ARC that was also a smart TV, you could pull audio out of the TV so that you could play it out of the radio. i like to put baseball/football/hockey or whatever on the TV and pipe the audio through the radio. this works great in my setup (audio is pulled from DTV receiver) with the exception of when i stream from a Roku stick plugged into the cockpit TV. when i'm streaming, i have to listen to the TV for audio.

outside of that, i wouldn't change a thing. still love the setup for the flexibility and ease of use.

good luck...best part of a new boat is making it yours.

Yeah T,

that is a great setup for sure! I don't think my Admiral would be happy with more than that either LOL, darn brass officers LOL. As for the transom speakers I don't know I'd have the stones to make that cut lol. I would like to add another subwoofer and possibly swap out the speakers at some point from Clarion to JL. I currently have wet sounds and they have been very good but I'm really impressed with the JL's so I think I'm going to go that route.

Yeah the boat has KVH but honestly I've been back and forth with systems for a few years now and I'm just tired of the $80 monthly bill for 2 hrs of use, I think I'm going to leave it inactive and just do the Smart TV route as we already do netfix and a have an decent Apple iTunes movie base.

I can't wait to do the survey tomorrow and get in up to my elbows with this new craft.
