Had a prior ? pitot low? error last week
changed impellers / all was good (Pitot low alarm gone)
took boat out after 20 minutes on 1200 rpm cruise - the starboard Motor quit underway @ 1200 rpm) smart craft Active alarm= Can2 fault 16
turn key = nothing (no voltage on gauge) but have 12 v at starter/ reset circuit breaker/ checked fuses/disconnected batteries (to reset smartcraft) Only thing you get with key is a little buz out of throttle body

any ideas on the cause or what the code means would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I swapped ignition Assy with no change

New batteries this spring- 1 battery negative was a little loose yesterday’s (got a 1/4 turn)

today I went down and reseated some connections & IT STARTED ?..

maybe battery charger restored battery charge? Only logic I have about it

gonna be a really calm day when I take it out

UPDATE

cleaned cables
went to go out today and the starboard alarm went off before we left the slip!

can 2 Fault 16 anybody know what that means?

thx

Manual 36 version 2006 list Fault 16 as
MAP sensor circuit Low

Will be no system icon, Alarm will sound, power is reduced by 90%

MAP circuit open. Airflow calculation is no longer valid. Power limit is active. Fueling level is a straight lookup based on demand (or TPI) and RPM.

Root cause : wiring or sensor problem

No reference to CAN2 but the CAN is the network so can also be the network cable

Still sounds like a bad connection.
Find the Gray wire on any of the MAP, TPS or Water pressure sensor. It should by 5V and not a bit less, nor more

I went back to battery connections and found one of the nuts has the thread detaching. Replaced and snugged. Hasn’t thrown any codes in the slip. I’m gonna sea trial with fingers crossed!

thanks for the assistance!

Next update

boat ran Flawlessly for 3 hours Yesterday. Went to pull into slip- starboard neutral/port forward with bow thruster
starboard quit- (turn key nothing)showed a ?etc sticking? alarm. Then later a can2 fault 16 like last week (motor would turn over but not start)
could this maybe be a bad Neutral safety switch?
I noticed a couple things just prior to this happening- port voltage usually 13.7 & was showing approx 12.5v
starboard temp was running 159 & went to 163
Gotta mechanic coming with scanner next week
The other crazy thing is when I did get the starboard to turn over I was getting some grinding noise from starter (or maybe tranny)

any ideas?

If voltmeter is accurate (very few are) this would indicate the alternator stopped working. Fully charged bat is 12.7V

I'm still thinking a bad connection, and could be the terminator on the network. Other then that I have nothing

UPDATE-
Had mercruiser tech out this past week. He left saying I had bad fuel / air ratios but couldn’t pin it to anything specific

i took the liberty of changing the manifold sensor and took it out for 2 hours Without problems. As i pulled it in the slip working the transmissions the port motor was dropping to 12.0 volts and it was throwing a can2 fault 16. I got tied up & I restarted the motors they went into forward by themselves!

the mercruiser tech and I took the boat out hooked up to the starboard and then port for an hour this morning. It ran great till we got in the slip. As we started the motors they went into forward again! He was hooked up and said he didn’t see it on his computer. He now suspects the Smartcraft computer is bad. He is calling Mercruiser for direction

any comment to these turn of events?

thanks

Ill go look at connections in morning. Motor grounds? Any advise on where to start? I reconnected batteries (which are new this spring) could i have a bad battery? Pull them and get load tested?
Thanks!

Your drive by wire, so look at the CAN connections. Grounds are another go place. Have never worked on the newer motors, but like all new stuff, the more things it has, the more that can go wrong. Sorry cannot be of more help

Still no word from mercury-

I found solenoids on starters not that tight so snugged them and took boat out
got to Lake Michigan pier heads (Water was 20 degrees colder) and starboard motor quit - Can2 fault 16 & DTS fault 21
i brought boat back inside inland lake on port motor (starboard alarm all the way) restarted starboard and drove 1 mile back out to Lake Michigan got 50? out in colder water and got a DTS fault 21 again!

could this be a bad water temp sensor?

I just don't know, but like with all networks if something that is connected to it has an issue, it can cause other things. A guy who may know is Iboats member MUC. He is on iboats and doesn't post very often but does know his stuff. He consults with dealers

PCM was removed by mercruiser tech and 1 set of connectors has corrosion (or possibly heat damage He thought)

the starboard PCM is full of water (???) I have no idea how that happened as I keep camper top on. Next rain I’m going to spend in engine compartment to see where water is entering
new pcm ordered and arriving next Wednesday
