Windlass Removal / Re-Installation

Hey Y'all,

I need to have my Windlass rebuilt (sending it out) on my '00 27PC. I haven't started yet, but wanted to check with the professionals before I started the removal to limit bodily harm and mental strain. If anyone has any removal and re-installment tips/tricks I'd greatly appreciate it.

Why do you feel it needs rebuilt? Did you perform any troubleshooting to determine if maybe the solonoids are not working? Motors usually do not go bad unless water may have gotten inside.

Did a little troubleshooting by talking with another boater but that was about it. Here's my problem...
Motor has power (both from the helm switch and at the bow). Deploys with no issues. Problem is, when the party's over and it's time to go home. If positioned right over the anchor with no tension, the windlass will not pull up the chain. I have to pull 5-10' of slack up onto the bow, when i hit the button the windlass takes it with ease into the locker. Pull another 5-10' up and hit the button again to get it into the locker, and so on until the hook is snug.

I'm all ears

Not too familiar with Windlass' in general so I doubt I did that. I have a generic Lewmar booklet that was in the Formula binder. I'm emailing Scott Smith to see what she came with out of the factory because I cant tell the model number. After that I'll reach out to Lewmar for a better schematic of all the "guts"

if not the solenoid - make sue you have a strong battery. These things put a lot of draw on them, and I've had issues getting the motor started. Once going - it runs great, but you might even try running your batt in parallel just to be sure.

Grab the chrome wheel on top and turn it clockwise to tighten. Let me know if it moves.

should have a tool to tighten the clutch with, would have come with the boat/windlass. mine was inside the anchor rode locker. not sure you could hand tighten it enough to solve the problem?? IF you are able to move it by hand, that would definitely indicate it is too loose.

I'll try to take a few pic's tomorrow if I get down there. If I remember correctly, I used a 1/2" drive breaker bar to tighten last year

Picking this back up, since the time is here to start using the anchor. Top is as tight as can be and still the same issue. It's all disassembled and will most likely have the electric motor rebuilt. Stay tuned.

Mechanic took it apart, and advised that the commutator and gear is shot. Giving Lewmar a call in the a.m. to see if i can get parts. If the price is right, I'll go that way...otherwise buy a new one :(
