What's inside a 21 year old exhaust manifold hose?

replaced these on both engines proactively. no issues that I know of with them, but at 20+ years old, thought why not.

I'll do some of the other hoses this fall.

crunchy insides.

21 years and 800 hours of raw water cooling on the thermostat housing bolts. Stainless replacements and new housing on order.

cleaned up the holes too. lots of gunk came out.

cleaned up the mating surface with:

I wasn't sure these would work on my cordless drill. Worked GREAT. I had been using a wire wheel, but these have no risk of metal chunks in my eye or in the cooling system, or in the block when I do the exhaust manifolds fall 2024.

The thermostat housing was so nasty inside, but you guys saw that the last time I cut one open, so strait to the trash.
