Transmission issue

Hello all. I Need some help. Yesterday the Admiral was driving the boat, (2000 41 PC), when another boat came real close and got nervous and pulled the transmission levers to neutral position then threw them back in gear, without throttling down. Did not notice any problems until I needed reverse to get into slip. The starboard transmission stays engaged in the forward gear. When I put it in reverse it dies. I can restart the engine however; it automatically starts moving forward. Any Ideas?

Thanks. I was worried about that as well. I was hoping for something electronic for an easier fix.
I don’t know why it posted here. Should be in the PC area. Can a moderator move this please.

So, got the quote for repair. Wondering if 40 hours labor is too much. Total cost to pull, rebuild and replace is around $8700.00. Does this seem right?

I can not see 40 hours doing it myself, but with a shop, should be less. Figure anything done is done with at least 2 people.

I don't know how your boat is configured, but if the trans can be removed without moving the prop shaft much, and blocking the motor, then figure 4 hours (x2=8). If boat needs to be dry docked, then more hours there. Assuming V-drive but does the prop shaft go thru the trans and attach on the back, or mounts flush on the front end.

Rebuild the trans is a one man job and to disassemble, clean and rebuild, maybe 14 for me, and 10 for them (x1=10). The trans is pretty simple and takes some skill but not a very high level. Just need to understand what is needed and how to measure tolerances.

Re-install, maybe 5 hours (2x=10)

So I'm seeing 30 hours max if boat does not need to be on the hard
If it needs to be on the hard, and the shop that is doing the rebuild, also is doing the dry dock (trailer) then I can see 40

Only way to see if you can get it done for less, check some places that will rebuild on the exchange. Send it off for rebuild, or send yours out and they send a rebuilt back. This way your just paying for the trans along with remove/replace, and not the local labor to rebuild

Not sure at all. I just know that it is locked in fwd. the boat yard said that the gear was jammed in and not releasing. 2500 ~3500 for rebuild.

Not sure if this helps but I'll offer it up anyway. I had a similar issue on my port side outdrive on my 1999 31PC. At the end of last season I moved from forward to reverse too fast and somehow the tranny locked into reverse only. I couldn't get it to go forward no matter what I did. I had the mechanic at my marina look at it this spring and I broke the shift cable assembly in the port outdrive. They had to pull it out of the water, obviously, and they found the gimbal bearing, the u-joint bellows, and the shift cable bellows needed replacement as well. Total with labor was $882. Looks like it was 5 hours worth of work. My advice would be to get a second opinion, you could be lucky and have a much smaller problem.

I have the twin Mercruiser 7.4l MPI with Bravo III outdrives, BTW.
