Throttle increase not smooth

When you open the throttle a little from idle at about 750rpm, nothing happens at first but then suddenly (without actually moving the throttle lever further) the rpm will go to about 2000rpm. So the increase is not smooth. This is a 1997 Formula 271 Fastech with a 454 Magnum MPI. Any suggestions how to fix? I can imagine that this will be a problem in driving the boat back on to the trailer.
 
Update on this: took the boat out today and under real live conditions of the forward gear engaged and actually driving the boat in water (as opposed to checking how it runs on land with the muffs) there was no problem at all. The boat seemed to accelerate quite smoothly and normally. I wondered whether that might be the case and today's experience (which is the first time I have taken the boat down to the river and actually driven it) confirmed what I thought. So the problem was no real problem.
