My 2000 280ss temp gauge on starboard engine keeps fluctuating. Temp will go to 180 degrees then will drop slowly to zero, then slowly rises to 180 then back to zero. During maintenance servicing, replaced starboard thermostat. Gauge still going up and down. Scoped engine and temp is where it's supposed to be. Replaced sending unit. Gauge still going up and down. What next, replace gauge? Anyone have any ideas?

check the wiring and connections on the back of the gauge. Also check the wiring in the area of the sender. Keep in mind that there are usually 2 senders, 1 for the temp gauge and one for the overheat alarm.

If all else fails, replace the gauge.

Swap wires between your two guages. If the "new" one fluctuates its not the guage. If the "old" still acting up, you will know it's the guage.

Had temp gauges checked, both of them. Both gauges are faulty. Just posted a search for gauges. Looking for 2 water temp gauges, VDO white face, 220 is the top temp. Came stock with my 2000 280ss. Let me know.

eBay would be a good source for those gauges . . . probably old VDO brand no longer made, but some lying around in marine supplier's stock.
