Router question

Can I get some intel from someone in the know about a router for the boat?

I'm getting tired of my wifi hotspot performance. It's fine in the middle of the day, but during rush hour, or at night, it's pretty slow due to the bandwidth being consumed. That said, I'm curious how a router would work tucked inside one of the cabinets. The only practical places on my boat........without having a wire pulling exercise......are by the aft cabin tv jack, or by the main cabin tv jack at the galley. Both would leave the router inside one cabinet or another...each behind closed doors. Anybody tried this? I know the signal goes thru walls, ect...., but in your experience, how far away from a typical (cable company rental) modem/router setup could I reasonably expect to get a strong wifi signal?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, just want to make sure I totally get it.

If you get high speed internet on your boat, directly from say the cable company and thus you are not using your hot spot.....the your router will be flawless everywhere on your boat and around your dock.

In fact at our marina, quite a few folks SHARE and have no issues.

There are different kinds of routers available, so before you buy we need to understand more of course :)

Yep. Fed up with my cellular based wifi hotspot (myfi) performance during periods of high traffic, and am thinking of switching to the local cable provider's service. I would connect the incoming cable to a modem/router combo....all in one chasis, that is "docsis 3" (highest speed) capable.

The meat of the question is.... How well will this wireless setup work on, and in close proximity of the boat, if the wireless router is left inside one of the cabinets with the door closed? Such application would not require pulling any cable to a more "open" location, as the modem/router would sit nicely, right beside one of the two installed cable TV jacks.

Thx.

The meatie answer is it will work perfectly.....

It shouldn't be a problem. I have free wifi at my marina, but I am near the end of the dock so my service was spotty. I put a wifi extender in my boat along with a wireless camera. The camera will notify me if there is movement as well as take a picture, I can look at the temperature inside the boat, and it will notify me if the camera is disconnected. Before the extender getting the info from the camera was hit or miss.

I am assuming this is going into a Formula and not some massive metal cruise ship. :) Wireless signal and interference can depend on many many factors but in a small (Even a 40PC) area that is mostly fiberglass i would say you are safe were ever you put it. If you want to extend the signal farther there are external antenna options but I don't think you will need anything but a standard home router. Since its going inside a closet i would not invest in marine grade. just get off the shelf unit.

nobody here has a set up that will pick up wifi when away from dock? if so, i'd like to know how it works, i'm looking at the Island time set up but i know there are several others out there.
