Out hull exhaust for F3

A fellow formulist picked up a solid F-3 LS this summer. We did all the show stuff,(paint,upholst...) but it's too quiet. The snag is that the old merc manifolds have the riser at the rear. Looks to me like all the aftermarket systems out are for the later style center riser applications. Any ideas about mods or suppliers of older style exhaust. Cost is an issue for him. Maby just go straight thru and then do what with the "y"? We don't think the fish in Lake Mich. will complain about the noise. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the board! I don't know of any aftermarket stuff that is a direct replacement for the older manifolds. It depends on how much money you wish to spend, aftermarket center dump manifolds straight out the back would be plenty loud! You could add a "silent choice" type system and have the best of both worlds, or straight pipe it and block off the Y-pipe. If you wish to remove the Y-pipe you will need to lift the engine out. Or you can cap it off at the top! Good luck and post some pics!

Thanks for the ideas. Heres a couple a pics, the F3 and my 272 out this month,(chilly)

I have an entire original Merc log style exhaust system. I cannot believe how good of shape it's in. I have it on ebay right now, I don'[t know if it will help, but it's just in too good of shape to throw away. If it doesn't sell on ebay, you can have them for just the shipping cost. Beware, they are heavy, so they would probably have to be shipped LTL, but if you have a commercial place you know of with a loading dock, I don't think the shipping would be too bad. I could strap them to a pallet and ship it that way. I swapped out the exhaust on Debbie's 22 Donzi for some aftermarket exhaust. I'm running into a couple of issues with routing it down to the tips.

Here's the exhaust. It's actually in better shape than it looks in the picture.

I have an issue to overcome. I need to drop the exhaust hose about eight inches in a 15 inch length to drop it to where the original tips come out. I think I'll have to have some "S" pipes fabricated to drop it down that far. I'm sure that sharp of a bend will cause the exhaust to melt the hose at the bends.

It's going to be tight. I looked in my old EMI catalog and the shortest length they had for a 4" SS 90 degree elbow was 7". And these had no straight ends to clamp the tubing to. If my thinking is correct it woud take up about 10". That should leave you about 5" for hooking things up. Keep us posted. I'd like to see what you come up with.

would stainless double wall stove pipe work? they make it triple wall also. i think 45 and 90 are available.

There are various "S" pipes I can buy online, but I'm afraid if it doesn't fit, I'm SOL. I talked to a guy at a local muffler shop the other day. He said to bring the boat down, and he'd take a look at what I need, and he could fabricate the pipe I need.

I think that is the best idea. After looking at the photos again I saw that there are strange angles that will have to be cut. He can probably do it in Stainless too. Save a lot of headaches.
