Oil change cost

Since my boat is new, ilmor wanted the first oil change done by a dealer. What is the typical cost for 2 inboard oil changes? And is it required to haul the boat out to do it?

Thanks for any advice.

Boat does not need to come out, the oil is sucked out. Cost depends on the dealer and area. Most charge in the $100 an hour range plus parts, and hourly charge starts when the tech leaves the dealership. Just call they should have no problems saying how much

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. They charged me $1200! 245 to haul the boat, 105 to block the boat, 300 labor per engine and 109 each for parts. They even sent me a service menu that says 180 for an oil change plus parts for gas engines.

Holy $hit. I'd have done it for you for $500 lol.

I do all my own work. Get this thing, it's not cheap, but it's AWESOME:

I only have the smaller one since I used to have a single engine boat. 3.5 gal would do both my engines in one shot.

that's about all you need to buy, other than oil and filters, and that's easy!

wow. what's the name of the place with the $600 / engine oil change?!..

this is the one i have now.

i'm always forgetting to remove the vent cap when pumping out. don't forget that. else it will pump SO SLOW.

says also 3.5 gallon, but I don't believe it... from my actual use.

Wow, I would dispute that. Was it their idea to pull the boat?

Did they also service the drives? If yes then the boat needs to come out.

Thanks everyone for the Wows! Lol. I would do it myself but ilmor required the first one to be done by a service center because they would check for break in issues by looking at the oil.

The boat was taken to the dealer to have the isenglass installed per the purchase contract and I was told that they needed to haul the boat out to install the glass. While I was delivering the boat I asked if they could also change the oil even though they are not ilmor certified and ilmor/formula agreed that they could.

I called today to dispute the charges and I was told that someone had to pay for the haul and blocking. I suggested that it was part of the purchase contract and his decision to haul it for the glass install. As for the oil change he own service menu states $180 + parts for a gas inboard oil change and diesels are hourly. I was charged 2.5 hours for $300 on each engine. When I brought up the menu price he said "oh, we must have serviced the outdrive too." I did not ask for that and ilmor recommends the first one at 50 hours. This was done at 23 hours.

These guys are taking you for a ride. This should have been done in the water, so your dealer / the marina should eat the pull out charges. There is no need to pull a boat to change oil.

With regard to the outdrives, if the first check was supposed to be at 50 hours, that could have waited until you pull the boat for the winter. The lack of integrity in your situation is truly astonishing.

LOL Marine MAX in Florida asked $1500 for a single engine oil change, I asked if that price included new piston and rings :) :) I ended up doing it myself, for like $300 including an electric oil pump. No manufacturer can void the guarantee as long as you use the right oil and filter. Just keep the receipt for you oil and filters.

And you can keep the old oil to have it analyzed as well.

Can't believe how many shady places exist. You'd think it's not possible to run an honest business any more...

Update: Formula has reached out to the dealer and has resolved the issues and I was credited the haul out cost as well as the oil change difference. Needless to say I will not be using this dealer again but am curious as to how I will get any warranty work done as well as remaining installs that were part of the purchase of the boat since this is the only dealer remotely close to my port.

I would reach out to Formula. When I purchased my boat I lived 300 miles from the closet dealer. I was able to use local marinas for service. Even as I traveled up and down the coast Formula Guard covered me. It was never a problem. Formula would always authorize the work just keep them in the loop. You bought a Formula customer service at it’s finest.

A contract is a contract, they have to install the remaining items. If there is a warranty claim, contact Formula again. In any case you could be on the phone/net every time something comes up
