OIL ANALYSIS

On a somewhat related topic (don't want to hijack your thread), do you ever send you oil out to an oil analysis lab when you change it? Sure, it would have been great to have done it when the engines are new but thinking at some point to start a baseline would be a good idea. Anyone have a specific lab they recommend to use?

I was thinking about doing this since my engines are brand new this season. Just to see what it looks like.

I use a single oil extraction pump for both engines though... I guess I'd have to keep the removed oil as separate as I can to get a reading for each... I also used the extractor for other stuff like power steering fluid, so I'm not sure how to clean out my tank... ugh.

You may want to clean out the canister between engines to assure that you are not cross contaminating the samples. I highly recommend the process as it is cheap insurance. A friend has over 2600 hours on his Cummins diesels and has had sampling done yearly with great results. With Blackstone, you can talk directly to the tech if you have questions or need further explanation.

Yeah, I think I'll do this if I can, just because the engines are brand new to get a baseline.

Also plan lots of other winter stuff.

How much oil do I need from each engine for a sample? Maybe I could just snatch off the oil filter and get it out of that?

You will need about a small medicine bottle full. If you contact them, they will mail you the prepaid containers so that you will have them for the end of the season.
Oil should be warm.

I use Blackstone as well with great results. Great for keeping track of you own boat as well as when purchasing a used, new to you boat.
