Ocean LED install

Formula Tenn:

If you buy my present boat in a couple of years, FYI two Ocean LED blues were installed under the transom. I ordered the ones that Formula installs at the factory. Have a blue LED cockpit too..Just like the pics posted by others.

Fun to look at. We have murky water until we get to Florida, but they are still visible here.

well heck i guess i don't need to worry about that then ;) that would definitely be a nice upgrade! just keep'er lookin good and we'll talk ;)

I will be doing underwater lights for sure, I have used OceanLED Pro16 Extremes in the past and they were fantastic. They are really expensive but you get what you pay for imo. They were the 4500 lumens and when they first came out I bought 3 at $950 then the following season I bought 2 more for $800 then two seasons later I came across some Pirahana round ones that were 4500 lumens and $300 each so I added two of those also. Yeah I’m a underwater light junkie.

funny...i'm on a new boat, and have been for 8 seasons since i started this thread.

check out the OceanLED Sport S3116s lights. they're 5k lumens, use a 90 degree top angle, and a 20 degree side angle for awesome penetration...all for about $400. i swapped out the original LEDs for these last season, and the change was dramatic.

drop them a line ... I talked to Nick for a bit until i decided on these. i was looking at much more expensive lights, and i'm thrilled with how his recommendation worked out.

of course if you're really into the underwater lights, you need to go with this...

time to get those lights synched to that radio upgrade you're talking about!

Very cool. I'm near you in Essex, MD. I'd like to do red on mine over the winter, but fear that the dirty water makes it all pointless.
Somedays I really miss boating at Raystown lake. you could easily see 10-20' down.

yeah...but then again you might not want to see to the bottom of these rivers.

i haven't seen anyone with red around here, so not sure how well it would work. the guys at OceanLED were great for talking through these kinds of topics. might want to see if they've seen it done...

hey John...i looked around to see if i posted about why i made my change last year, but i don't see it, so i apologize if this is a repeat.

there are a few things that i didn't like about the old OceanLED 2010 lights that Formula had put on my 45. first, i kept having to replace either the lights, or the drivers as they are separate on that model. i think 2 things were at play.

the center light was installed below the water line of the bilge. downside here is that the connector is almost always below water, and while it's waterproof, i don't think they intended it to sit below the level of nasty bilge water. i think there were a few times where water got into the connector and caused issues with either the light, or the driver.

also, Formula wired the lights off of the remote control box, using a Bosch style relay to drive them. that's fine, but the lights were daisy chained which causes a drop in voltage as you move from port to starboard. i think this was frying the driver on the starboard most light.

so, the 3116's use a built in driver which means no connection on the back side of the light which fixed the center light issue. then i re-wired everything to use a single Bosch relay per light which gives me consistent voltage across all 3 lights. i haven't had any issues since i made these changes.

since you're looking to make some changes, i thought i'd throw that out there. good luck with your mod's, and i can't wait to see what it looks like!

Nice T! yeah I was looking at the Pirhana's until now! I will go with the 3116's for sure. How many have you put on? I'd like to do one to each side also so the shine in the wake spray.

I went slightly overboard on my last boat, I'll get a pic at night but here they are in the daytime on the hard. Here is ones of just the 5 Pro16 Extremes Lit, I'll get a pic with all 9 lights this week.

i only did 3. port, starboard and center on the stern. not sure about doing any on the sides myself...if you're running with them on the housing is out of the water, and the housing is what cools them. just be careful you don't burn 'em up.

i was actually talking to someone yesterday that said our local PD is cracking down on folks running with underwater lights on because the blue is the same color as the PD! i said ...so people might think the cops are running away from them? in a 48' cruiser?? no sense...

I'm not surprised by this. The RA Fish & Boat Commission put out a statement that by law the only lights that are to be on when running are your red/green/white navigation lights.

Yeah I can imagine that, we haven't had a police issue yet. I'm thinking 3 for sure, its that off season idle hands that get me neck deep in modifications and buying upgrade parts lol. I'll do a bunch of research before I buy a set for the sides.

Check out what I just found, BluefinLED Piranha P24 expensive but 10,000 lumens

Just curious if you ever installed those piranha lights.... I'm looking to put two of them in the back of my 40 as my ocean LEDs have failed as well.
