Motor is overheating

Hi all, I am a new owner of a 79 Formula 233 with twin inline 4's. I'm really excited about this boat, it is in great shape, has been pampered all of its life apparently. The port engine is overheating when running, but it stays cool at an idle. I don't know much about I/O units, this boat has OMC 400's. Each engine has its own cooling system and I think it has heat exchangers in a cylinder about 4 inches across. What is likely causing my engine to overheat and how do I go about testing and repairing it? Thanks, Roy

Check the thermostat? If it is an alpa drive it has a water pump in the foot of the drive that may be bad also.

Yes, thermostat, and apha drive impeller are the first line service items to check. I found the impeller blades from my alpha in the oil cooler of the engine.
After that the intercoolers on the side of the engine could be restricted. You can check for flow by running the engine and feeling with your hand to see if they get hot or not. They should be doing the same thing the engine is. If not then the circulation pump on the engine is not working (metal impeller rusted away) or there is no circulation in the coolers (plugged).

Good luck with getting her cooled. And welcome to the forum. ;D ;D

I've solved the problem, seems like it was as simple as worn out radiator caps on the cooling systems and sticking thermostats. I've had several full throttle tests with the engins staying about 180 degrees. Thanks for the advice, Roy
