Hi , I am new to this forum i`m located down in Australia,
I have been looking at a 1989 model Formula SR1 31ft for sale nearby . The boat appears to be in good shape on the outside plain white gelcoat with graphics removed .but looking in cabin I found evidence of rot in plywood on bunks & in engine bay someone has drilled holes in top of main keel engine support stringer .I stuck screwdriver in hole & wood seems soft & a bit moist ,bulkhead for fuel tank is fractured looks like wood rotted out behind.
I really like this boat but a little worried about the rot .Would this hull be strong enough if stringers were rotten is it a big deal or is the SR1 P1070001.jpgP3310017.jpgP3310018.jpghull strong enough anyway??
Any help much appreciated thank you

steer clear of any hull with rot in stringers. very expensive to repair unless you are capable of doing it yourself. then it is a crap ton of work. and likely it ain't just the stringers.

I would have do do work myself .What do you think boat would be worth given a worse case scenario of bad stringers transom etc ?.engines & drives appear to be reasonable condition & running .Originaly before I noticed rot of doing an even trade on my2006 Jeep Commander 5.7 Hemi don`t know now if he's getting the better end of the deal.I`m thinking maybe 10 thousand dollar cash deal thanks

The strength of the boat is in the bulkhead and stringers, not the hull. So, your answer would be no, not strong enough. In doing the repairs, I would also plan on a new fuel tank, as it probably is sitting in wet foam, given the rot in the bulkhead.

If you are in to fixing the structure of boats, then you have found a nice project.
