Looking to buy a 41 PC

Good morning,
I’m new to the forum, new to Formula boats, fairly new to boating. I have an appointment to look at a 1999 41 PC, Cummins 450 hp, 1250 hours, 1000 maintenance has been done, new electronics package in 2016, bow thruster, freshwater boat most of its life, now in saltwater in the mid-Atlantic region. I was told the current owner is a stickler for maintenance and does much of it himself. I have been scouring the internet trying to do as much research as possible.

I have Formula, Regal, Sea Ray and Cruisers on my list but recently discovered issues with Sea Rays through, my research, with wet cores, stringers in the larger 40Â’ plus hulls built in the 1990Â’s through early 2000Â’s. I even went to look at a 460 Sundancer at a brokerage but I was told I could not look at it because they were repairing/replacing soaked stringers. I have scratched Sea Rays off the list.

From everything I have found through research the Formula brand is the boat to get and I keep coming back to the 41 PC. They are great looking boats, with a good floor plan. The used Formulas I have casually observed from boat shows, walking the marinas seem to hold up well cosmetically compared to similarly aged boats.

Is there any preference regarding engines? Cummins, Yanmar, Volvo?

Are there any problem areas I should be aware of and look for when I see this 1999 41 PC?

Thank you very much

I can't help you with any of your specific questions but I do know that the 41 PC is widely regarded as the best PC that Formula ever made. I'm sure others will chime in on the questions, good luck with the search.

My understanding is that the 41PC with the Cummins Diamond Series 450 is the best combo for fuel efficiency. I looked at one a couple of years ago with a lot of issues, but was still a solid boat. If this has been well maintained and is a good price, you will not be disappointed.

I have a 2003 41PC with Volvo TAMD 75 EDC motors, I am the second owner and have owned it for 8 years, it's the best boat I have ever owned. It has been virtually trouble free, I get great fuel economy and cruise at 24 knots all day long, the annual maintenance is reasonable and it rides like a dream . If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them.

I have a 2002 41PC with Volvo TAMD 74 motors. I've owned it for 4 years and is one of the most seaworthy boats out there. The Cummins engines are excellent engines and as I understand
less expensive to repair than the Volvo's. There are no real changes to the boat between 1999 and 2004 other than engine choices. My friend owned a 2000 41PC before I did and I fell in love
with it as did my wife. She "forced me" to buy the 41PC. Just have a reputable surveyor look at the boat before purchase. Otherwise it's a great boat.. Any questions let me know.. Good Luck!!

Why did it get renamed 40PC? Are the newer ones actually shorter?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the 41PC was the precursor the Formula Yacht and the 40PC is actually a 37PC. It has to do with the time period when manufacturers calculated the LOA to the transom. As swim platforms got more popular and an integrated part of the boat, manufacturers started including them in the length. That's how a 37PC became a 40PC without any real changes, they just started including the swim platform in the length.

I have a 2002 41 PC of which I am the 2nd owner and have owned it since it was 1 year old. My boat has VP TAMD 74 P-B diesels and what I can say is that there was a safety recall for this engine years ago. It would lurch itself into gear while in neutral and idle...was not fun I can tell you. VP issued a wiring harness and paid to have it installed on any of these engines with problems. My problems were intermittent and scary and lasted up to last summer when VP ended up replacing the computer on the SB. Port never had this problem. But, all that said, they are great engines and this boat is phenomenal. Formula has a great gel coat which looks brand new after a semi-annual detail. Just had her done...whole boat down to water line...exceptional. I have replaced all TVs (I have 3 as the original owner had one installed in aft lounge/bedroom) with smart TVs but, I have to say that the style is so nicely done and so classic that you cannot tell she is 17 years old. Formula is far superior to Sea Ray. I have had to do a lot of things just due to age but, they are considered expected maintenance for a boat this age.

I hope you buy your dream boat and enjoy it as much as I do and have for all these years.

My boat is the 41 and it is documented with the USCG. The documentation paperwork issued by the USCG says that the boat is actually 43 feet.

Andrew is correct the 40PC was originally named the 37PC in 2000 and 2001. It was renamed the 40PC mid way through 2001 without any structural changes. The 41PC is a totally different model. Longer, wider, heavier.

I concur with all the Accolades that have been bestowed upon the 41PC by the above owners. This is my second year with a 2000 41PC with Volvo's with bow and stern thrusters and it is awesome. I originally viewed a 40PC and lost the bidding war and came upon my jewel after following her for two months. Rides like a dream, great economy. The 40PC is shorter, narrower, and v-drives but it does have GREAT Engine access, from the swim platform so no mess in the cockpit during maintenance. Every one from my yard that goes for ride with me is in awe. Keep looking there are quite a few out there. There is one on Atlantic City that I tried to see but could not get viewing, Knot 10 is showing it and I am not fond of them. There is another one in upper New Jersey I believe in Brackas water and think dealer owned. Saw a great one in Florida but do not know if it is still available. Also I believe anything above 2000 has Stainless Windshield frame standard..Think the perfect is the 2004 with Cummins if you can find one. Last year they made it and probably worked out all the kinks, if it had any. There are 40 PC's out there that look awfully close to the 41PC but they are the 37's rebadged, then in 2004 the came out with the present 40PC. Good Luck Searching and you n=made a great choice.

So the 40PC is actually a 37 and you say access for maintenance is phenomenal?? What about the 41, how is access on it? I thought I'd read somewhere that some of the regular maintenance items on a 41 where a nightmare to access in one of these boats but don't remember which one it was??

My '95 34PC is actually 37', I wonder if it became the 37PC in a later model??

I think my head hurts....

However my 40 PC with IPS 500 Volvo diesels has really good access

In 2005 there was a complete refresh of the 31, 34, and 40 PC, the 34 and 31 received the forward swept arch that the 40PC and 37PC had along with the newer hull running lines on the 37PC.

I have a 2001 37PC which is actually the 40PC, the build date was October, 2000. it is 12'8" W x 42'7" LOA. The newer 37PC is 12" W x 38'5" LOA. The 37/40 PC was never offered with stern drives, the newer 37PC was/is offered with stern drives.

The 41PC is 13'6" W x 43'1" LOA and came with either gas or diesel engines. The 41PC also never received a forward swept radar arch or pod drives. It was eventually replaced by the 47/48 Yacht.
