Looking for a new Boat...

We just sold our 34PC and are on the hunt for a 2009+ 37PC. There is not much inventory out there and I am considering salt water boats on the east coast. So my question is....with the 8.2L mercs, how concerned do i need to be with the manifolds and risers? How long do they typically last being in brackish water? Should SeaCore be a must if the boat has been in saltwater its entire life? Im a freshwater guy so i dont have alot of knowledge here...any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

I bought my 2008 350 SS in Aug 2015. I am the 3rd owner. Boat had 350 hours on Seacore 496 Mag HOs. Sea trial and survey were good. Heat gun on manifolds showed normal temps. Boat had little maintenance history. I found original owner and confirmed he put 300 hours on the engines and used the local dealer for regular maintenance. I was unable to locate the 2nd owner. I have put another 100 hours since purchase and have never had a temperature issue. However, three months ago I replaced manifolds and risers just for preventative maintenance. The old manifolds were still in good shape. It gave me confidence that the boat was well maintained for those 300 hours under the original owner. It all depends on maintenance, flushing engines after every use, preventing any salt water intrusion into the engine room, storing boat on a lift, etc.

Please help me understand why you replaced the manifolds on a Seacore engine? I thought the manifolds were closed cooled.

Maybe he means the exhaust risers ? As they run salt water through them as we know to cool the antifreeze off the heat exchanger.

Are the manifolds closed cooled? I thought they just had an additional coating.

Best of luck, I had to go to OK from OH to find a fresh water boat...they are out there, you just gotta DIG DEEP!

Seacore 496's are not full closed cooling, exhausts are sea water cooled.. here's a link to more info: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engine-repair-and-maintenance/non-repair-i-o-and-inboards/658564-496-mercruiser-closed-cooling-1-2-or-full

Yeah but im talking about 8.2L engines. The 496 is the old style (8.1L) that merc stopped making back in 2010 or so.
