IPS Bronze bearing

:'( Had the IPS drive oil changed last week and the mechanic found the starboard side had water in the oil. They checked the prop seals, which were good and the only other water introduction would be the trans cooler. Need to have the bronze steering seal changed to the new stainless steel bearing. The Port side was good clean oil. Problem is very recent as the top side dip stick showed clean oil. I am considering only having the starboard side done as this will cost about 8K. Has anyone had this issue and only done the one side?

Water intrusion because of bronze (or nybral) steering seal seats is a known problem. I would recommend that you have both sides done. It's just a matter of time. Also, if you didn't have water intrusion on the port side, having the seat replaced is much less expensive as a pod rebuild is not necessary. I don't know who is doing the rebuild but I had it done three (3) years ago (both pods) and the cost was about 12K total and that included all bearings the horizontal and vertical drive shafts, prop shaft and prop seals. It also included replacing the oil pumps on the pods with the improved versions (which I would recommend doing on both pods). Since replacing the steering seal seats, no water intrusion has occurred and only normal maintenance seems to be required.

I do know that Volvo Penta recommends replacing the clutch packs when water intrusion is observed but because my water intrusion was very minimal the clutch packs were not replaced based upon the recommendation of my Volvo Penta dealer and it turned out to be the right decision. I have not had any problems with the clutches or any part of the pods since the rebuild.
