Have you opened it up to check the heating element? It can be leaking from the element seal which can easily be replaced.
You should be able to remove the front cover for the electrical connections, this is also where you will be able to access the element as well as the thermostat. Worth a try to see if you can locate the source of the leak.
I would think not. Mine is crammed in behind the starting batteries. You have to be a contortionist to get back there.
