Has anyone changed the rudder packing?

Before I engage this endeavor, I would like to get some info from those who may have some hands on experience.

I really don't want to take the boat out of the water, considering I really have other need. Bottom paint is good, etc... I know it can be done on the water, so I am willing to get down and dirty.

  • What type of packing should I get?
  • I know water will gush in, is it manageable?
  • Will I be able to insert the new packing with the pressure?
  • How should I prep the nuts, threads, etc...
  • Am I crazy?

I had electralysis problems with the port rudder which caused a hole in the plate, so that the rudder "fell down" about 4 inches. I had it hauled and the rudder removed and tested, it was repacked and a new plate installed which holds it in place. That is my only rudder experience. Good luck!

I plan on doing mine in the fall after it gets hauled out for winter storage. Let us know how it goes.

Are they leaking? I mean, I was back there when I installed my Auto Pilot and things all seemed good. We are in fresh water with only 240 hours on the vessel. Just wondering if we should consider this a maintenance issue?

Thanks,
Dave

Mine are, they were tightened after launch, but the port side is still leaking a little bit.

Yes, they where leaking, but my boat has almost 700 hrs and its 14 years old. I don't think you have anything to worry about. All seals weep or even leak a little. I had a constant drip. All fixed!!!
