Doing my first end of season oil change on my 98 merc 7.4 MPI's. What oil viscosity should I be using? Should I use synthetic? Pay extra for a "marine" filter or just go with a quality auto parts filter? Thanks in advance.

Use API certified oil and good filter and all good.
Many use diesel 15W40 because there is more zinc, and I agree.
Synthetic is better then Dino oil in reducing wear, but there has been not been a motor failure in modern times due to oil, only due to lack of maintenance or factory defect

The spec for the engines are 10W-40 (I believe) . . . at least my MPI 7.4's are. I get either 10W-40 or 20W-50 . . . any name brand. Whatever Wallymart has at the time.
I usually buy the Mercruiser/Quicksilver filter, because I know that one will fit in the tight space of the remote oil filter. They are not expensive.
An automotive filter will also be fine.
