DOT permits required for towing?

Hello, I've towed PWC's and many smaller bow riders all over the midwest and never heard nor been stopped for any permit. I know some of you guys tow your larger Formula's, what is the real scoop on DOT permits if traveling from Ohio to Texas? I have a 26PC

26 pc should be well within normal limits with out a permit. Of course different states have different laws, but the 26 should be good to go. I was towing a 31pc, 11 foot beam and had to run an H class permit for oversized water craftto 10' wide. HHHMMMM, I may have been fudging that permit limit a bit, but the difference was $45 for the H class and $300 for the C class. I didn't think the cops were going to pull out the tape measure for that extra foot. We used all the flags and banners and never had a problem with the law. I don't think they wanted my big boat half on the hwy while they dickered with me anyway. Bridge clearances were a different story, but thats for another thread. ;D
