Delaminating Caninets

Any advice on glue to resecure delaminating cabinet veneer?

When I purchased my boat three years ago, the laminate was coming off the edge of one of the cabinet doors. I took the door off with the intension of trying to re-glue it. But before gluing, I figured I'd try to "reactivate" the factory glue by using an iron with parchment paper. It worked great and has held up for three years now.

Caution with the iron! Start with light heat. I tried this yesterday because it sounded like a great idea and it was because it works. I started with the "synthetics" setting on my iron because I thought that would be appropriate for the laminate but it was still too hot and caused the pictured damage. The lamination started to melt. I turned the iron temperature down and with just the right amount of heat and parchment paper it does seem to "re-activate" the glue and re-adhere the laminate to the wood panel surface. I am having some edges that are starting to delaminate and catch on your fingers when you open and close doors or cabinets by the edges and not the knobs
. This pictures shows the edge of our lavatory door that was delaminating.

Good information James, guess I took the catious approach and started with a low heat setting. Didn't think what getting too hot might do!

Yep, same as with sanding or polishing, always start with the less aggressive setting that gets the job done, thanks for the tip.

Ouch! Finally gave it a shot with an iron on the lowest setting, moving quickly and lightly, and over parchment paper. As soon as it started to adhere, the top layer bubbles over the laminate.

Does anyone know how to source replacements? I would need three. Or is it better to go ahead and replace them all at this point, and if so, how would I go about that?

Go right to Formula. I purchased two doors but have yet installed them - it will be a winter project. Also after my purchase, two more doors delaminated.

You can buy them from Ebel Woodworking. They make them for Formula, I sent some back and they relaminated them.

Okay, good to know. I?ll see about having new doors made.

I tried to call Formula but received a message that I should send an email for faster service. Sent an email but haven?t heard back.

Doors are on their way to Dan to be used as a template to make new ones. I think I am going with high gloss wenge. I will keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Yes, I had dark cherry before, which is no longer available. That made the decision to re-do all of the cabinets that much easier. It was about $1400.

That is a great price - I purchased new doors from Formula for my 41PC and for the large one over the galley sink was $190 and the small o one was $84 - so $1400 for everything was definitely a deal. So I Paid close to $300 for two doors.
