Boat vs. Bridge- Max Heights

A friend recently ripped off his radar arch while trailering under a low bridge. Ruined was the Arch, radar , GPS antenna, air horn, and poles for the canopy. Yeah..OUCH!

Just wondering if there's been anyone else whose been through this situation in regards to insurance claims and repair procedures. The boat has seperate boat insurance but the policy was just opened (two months ago). He fears the boat insurance may not cover being a new policy and that the boat was trailered (the only sub line found in his policy states coverage to trailered boats that are being taken out for repair purposes that can't be done in water).

He contacted his auto insurance, who after confirming with a supervisor, stated they would assign a claim number and send out an adjuster, giving him the impression they would cover. But they asked for his boat insurance company name and policy number. I guess the car insuarance co. had been more than helpful and accomodating and his deductible compared to the boat ins. is about half the amount. (for now anyway).

He knows repairs will take awhile which will probably decommission his boat for the rest of the season but wonders if the arch would be fiberglass repaired or compltely replaced. He fears the structural integrity of the arch may me lessened if fixed instead of replaced.

Any comments or advise on this bozo's accident would be appreciated.

Double check the bridge clearance if it is marked. Somtimes they pave the road and add 4 inches of pavement. thus the clearance is 4 inches less. Of course thats only if you need to fight

ANYTIME A VEHICLE IS BEING TOWED, THE TOW VEHICLE INSURANCE COVERS ALL LIABILITY, INCLUDING ANY DAMAGE TO THE BRIDGE HE HIT, OR OTHER VEHICLES. BOAT INSURANCE SHOULD COVER HIS DAMAGE TO THE BOAT.

Thanks for the replies. The bridge was not marked. That was the first think I asked thinking it would make him more at fault (he should've still stopped to check since it was first time taking that streetway). Why would the tow vehicle insurance even take an interest in a claim if there was no damage to the tow vehicle or bridge and no injuries. Would they get together with the boat insurance co. to split up costs??

THE TOW VEHICLE MUST COVER ALL THE LIABILITY FOR THE ACCIDENT. SINCE THERE WAS NONE, I GUESS THAT THEY DO NOT EVEN NEED NOTIFIED. USUALLY WHEN YOU HIT A BRIDGE OR OVERPASS, THE STATE REQUIRES IT TO BE INSPECTED FOR ANY DAMAGE. YOUR TOW VEHICLE INSURANCE COVES THIS. BOAT DAMAGE IS PAID FOR BY THE BOAT INSURANCE.

Legal height for towing anything is 13' 6" tall. If he was over that without a permit, he could have some stiff fines.

I am 14' 2" on the trailer and here out west, I fit under most bridges. I am cutting the radar mount down 3" to get under 14'.

Dont cut it. Order the swing mount from Sea View. Uses 2 thumb screws and has a hinge to fold down over arch.

Yes, but 2" gets me at 14' and 3" gets me at 13'11". I didn't like how it would all look with the hinge on my set up.

I even have one of those I decided not to use.

If anyone wants it, let me know, I'll make you a killer deal. $160. I never installed it. New it was about $250.
