Accepted offer on 45 Yacht

Well fellas, I have an accepted offer on a 2010 45 Yacht..... original owner, lift kept and never bottom painted. 350 hours on engines and 250 hours on gen set. Does anyone know if this era boat has the generation 1, or 2 pods?

If I'm not mistaken, the first generation pods had to be hauled to replace the oil in the pods. Would be great if these were a later generation and didn't have to be hauled to do so.

Broker stated that pods were serviced, but waiting for paperwork showing proof of whats been performed. Any advice you all could offer would be appreciated.

Congratulations! Please post some pics when you have them. I'm sure you're super excited, and you won't be disappointed!!! They're great boats, and one with such few hour should bring you years of enjoyment.

Personally, I'd have the first service done by a qualified mechanic, and sit over their shoulder as they did everything. It's a good way to learn, and they might catch things that you won't. You should also have them run the serial #'s to look for service requirements if your engine surveyor didn't do that. Even though she only has 350 hours, the years will require a bit of maintenance if it hasn't been done by the previous owner. If you don't hire someone for it, just grab the service manual from the Volvo site to see what needs to be worked on. Also, you can grab the service manuals for $50-60 of their site if you'd like them.

I believe that 2010 will still be first gen pods, so you'll need to haul for an oil change. My neighbor has a '10, and his are gen 1. You can probably figure this out by running the model # through the Volvo site to look for parts diagrams.

Lots of fun stuff to do now! Good luck with it all!

Great Choice and congratulations. Had an conversation with a salesman at Javit's show and he took away some of skepticism about pods - he stated the cost for shafts, struts, props and fiberglass equal pod cost. I remember reading a report from Volvo when they first came out where they intentionally hit a sand bar to take out the pod and in this case they were able to retrieve the pod and were able to re-install and be on there way - never with a straight or v-drive.

I just realized that I never updated this initial post. I went to look at the boat, which was a few states and few hundred miles away and unfortunately found it to be neglected, both cosmetically and mechanically.

The good news is, while doing research on the boat, I found out that Volvo stopped using the bronze POD steering rings and started using the stainless steel rings for their D6/POD set up in the 30th week of 2010, which didn't include this boat and just one reason I passed on it.

I realized that I had an Old School mind set, when it came to wanting to stray from a v-drive propulsion system and now the admiral wants our next boat to have an aft lounge that means a 2011 or newer 45 Yacht, since they stopped making them with v-drives in 2007.

Please PM me, if anyone knows of a 2011 or newer 45 privately up for sale, or coming up for sale.

The search continues.....

I was curious what the status of your new boat was,I wanted to see if the results of the survey was what you thought it would be. If it’s the same boat that I looked at in the fall I agree with you it was very very rough and neglected, please keep us up-to-date on your search

Shame. Lift kept should’ve been nice. Some people don’t deserve to own a boat of this caliber.. he should’ve bought a cheeseray Pics made it look nice

Agree 100%..some owners with deep pockets see these boats as purely status symbols and use them to impress their friends and family without any concern for what it takes to properly care for this calibre of vessel.

I know it's not 2011+, but I see this boat regularly on the listings and if slip size constraint weren't an issue, I'd strongly consider it: https://www.boattrader.com/boat/2007-formula-45-yacht-7209090/

Freshwater to boot.

That's a v-drive powered, in case you hadn't noticed and was what prompted me to post my a prior discussion of PODS vs. Shafts.
Frank, the broker puts you in direct contact with all his sellers, who I spoke with and was considering going to go to Chicago a check it out, but don't want to ship a 45 by land.... too involved and expensive, nor do I have the time to drive it back, which is also expensive, if I hired someone to do so. Owner seems like a nice guy and has done a lot of upgrades to the boat. He recently put in a new cockpit refrigerator in.
