6x9 Speaker to 8.8 JL Audio

Has anyone done this on their factory 6x9 speakers? I'm working on this now...thinking i need a 9-10" diameter backing plate (1/4" thick) and a 1/2" spacer as the 8.8 needs 5.2" of depth.

I've been looking into it and I'm considering the Rockford Fosgate 8" speakers, they only need 3.42" depth. I do think JL's are better speakers.

Having some issues as the 6x9 hole is a little too big. The speaker doesnt quite cover it so I need to put a plate behind it.

Corian works well and is easy to work with. I had to make rings for my old 1994 34pc because the arch was not deep enough to accept the new speakers.

Finally got the JL 8.8's installed. For anyone interested, here is what i did to get it to work...

-increased the 6x9 hole size towards the bottom of the existing hole (depth increases as you move down from the arch)
-used a 10" diameter, 1/4 thick piece of starboard as a backing plate (ordered online)
-used a acrylic 3/4" led speaker ring

So far they sound good, they get much louder than the polks i had there before. Still have some tuning to do on the amp.

Here are a few pics of the JL 6.5's I installed in the arch. Used a 3/4" LED ring as they need 3" of depth. Also took the opportunity to replace the arch light with a new blue LED version.

Here is another option for the 6X9. The company is DC Gold. They are 100% stellar and a 100% waterproof speaker.

Nice....def sounds like a good option for those who want a direct replacement.

Jason, let us know how the LED light rings hold up. I was going to instal them as well but heard some concerns with longevity.

Will do...first i have heard of that.

Had the boat out all weekend...Sat...Sun...Mon. Did an overnight as well. These speakers sound awesome...got alot of complements on how great my system sounded. Was able to turn them up loud and no distortion at all.

Jt239, where did you order the starboard backing plates from?

Check out buckwoodcraft.com
They have up to 9" plates you can order on-line. I had to call to order some 10" plates.

No prob. I tried the 9" plate but it wouldn't completely cover the factory hole left from the 6x9s.

I know this post is a couple years old, but hoping to get some assistance as well. I'm purchasing a 06 34PC and want to upgrade the 6x9 to the JL Marine 8.8" M-Series. I see that you order a 10" diameter, 1/4 thick piece of starboard.

Did you cut the ring yourself and where did you order the LED speaker ring? Appreciate any assistance you can provide. Looking forward to getting this done!

I got the plates precut from the website listed above..they came ready to install. I got the led rings from a local shop but i think they are pretty easy to find online.

I put in these from DC Gold. They are hand made 100% waterproof speakers. They sound just as good if not better than my JL Audio in the arch.

Both starboard and acrylic are really easy to cut of you have a circle jig and a router. I replaced my 6x9's with Wetsounds 808's and they sound great!!

Just finished a Revo8 install with a 10" starboard trim plate from buckwoodcraft. Looks and sound great
