5.7 GXI vs 5.7 GI

I saw this in another post and thought it was interesting to learn about the difference between the GXI and GI:

First, let me thank all of the members who took the time to answer my 2/12 request for information about the difference between the Volvo Gi and GXi engines on a 3360. I decided to give the Regal factory a call and I thought you folks might be interested in their reply. Jackie JIV, MAGISTEr31, and Pleasure Time were all absolutely correct in their explanation of a different cam and a reprogramed ECM which does disperse a little more fuel into the chamber. The really big difference, however, is because of the added horsepower in the GXi, Regal outfits these "bigger" engines with F5 props vs the smaller F4 on the Gi. Let me quote from an e-mail from Randy Gills, the Systems & Propulsion Engineering Mrg at Regal: "As I look at the tests and compare them, I see the 5.7 Gi (twin 280 HP) is running faster 0 to 30 MPH than the 5.7 GXi (twin 320 HP). The extra HP of the 5.7 GXi required a bigger prop that is more work for the 5.7 to bring up to speed on the bottom end. As expected, the GXi is faster on top end but only by about 1 MPH. I also notice the 5.7 is a little better on fuel... From a price vs. performance standpoint, the 5.7 Gi is the better value, faster acceleration, similar top end, but less investment. I think the only reason we offer more power in the boat is that customers "think" they need more power..." Randy included 3 pages of test data sheets to back up his conclusions. At 3500 rpm, the 3360 with the Gi is off 1 MPH but improves MPG by .2 which translates into 30 miles further on a tank of gas. The Gi not only puts you on a plane faster, 5.8 seconds, but also maintains plane at 9.9 mph, 2.1 mph slower than the GXi. Randy did agree that if you habitually carried several heavy passengers, the GXi, with its added horsepower, could be a better investment. As DaveR also pointed out, unofficially, from Volvo, the 280 hp engine is "very strong 280 hp...it's actually closer to 300hp." Thanks again
