48 Yacht

Ok all you Formula junkies....I cannot seem to find an answer to this on line...but, does anyone know what years Formula manufactured the 48 yacht? I see a few for sale and, I have read that it replaced the 47 yacht however, I cannot find anything advising the years it was produced. I saw a you tube video for a test drive of a 2007...I see a 2005 for sale but, that's it. I know that the 45 yacht was introduced in 2006, I believe. Anyone have any knowledge on the 48?

If my memory serves me correctly, the first 47 was made in early 2006 and was underpowered. Formula extended the rear of the boat and made room for a bigger engine. The new version was now called the 48 with the 660 horsepower Cummins diesels.
In 2007, the 45 was developed with shafts, and shortly after IPS. No one wanted the shaft version so only the IPS was available. This version outsold the 48, so I believe it was discontinued in 2008. I am going off memory, so If I am mistaken, please correct.
Good luck on your search, the 48 was a terrific boat.

Frankly, I am a bit scared regarding IPS. They are very service oriented...far more than straight shafts. From what I read & hear, it's all about seals & the maintenance of those seals...and draft. The 48, from what I read, comes with V drives...so similar to a straight shaft but with the engines facing opposite direction and using a transfer case to connect to the shaft...creates more space in the engine room...is that sound correct?

Divergirl,
There are many opinions on what may be the best option but every application has pros and cons. Use your best judgement and talk to others to get their opinions. I prefer the IPS. I have never owned one but have friends that do and the performance and maneuverability is second to none. The only complaints my dock mates have is that the wife no longer needs the husband to take the boat out. Maintenance is expensive but so is boating. Look at the costs of electronics, fuel, etc.
Good luck in your search.

You are right, many opinions. I will know when I find the right boat and, if that boat has IPS, then I go with it and I educate myself on how best to enjoy it and maintain everything.

I went to see a 2005 in 2018, when I pulled up next to her with my 41PC , I could have been the the tender for the 48. Much Much higher and guess who she was powered with Volvo 480's and felt it was underpowered, think it was made only until 2008.

As I’ve been doing my own research on this topic. All the boats are great. Just would not purchase that size boat with small engines. Some of the 2004 models had the Tamd75 engines. That’s the same as my 41pc. Wouldn’t want to try to push a boat that size with that small size engines.

The 48 was built model years 2005/2006. 2004 was the 47. The 45 was built for the 2007 model year to present.

- I just saw the list of Formulas that you have owned (1996 280 SS, then 1999 400 SS, 2004 40 PC ,then 2005 48 Yacht and now a 2007 45 yacht. Sold 45 Yacht. 2009 40 PC). I am very interested to hear about your experiences with the PCs and Yachts. Comparison of performance, build, accommodations, etc. I have a 34PC and you have owned every boat I would consider for an upgrade. :)

I think it was the 47 which was underpowered....that is why Formula came out with the 48. There is one for sale in TX with 660 Cummins, V drives. The 48 did not have the 480 Volvos.

Hi jerybak...how do you like the 47? It is hard getting a history in both the 47 & the 48. Like the years manufactured. What has been your experience with the 47 being powered by the 480 VPs? Speaking of which...are they the TAMD74 P-B engines? If so, have you ever experienced either engine engaging in forward gear while in neutral or idle? This was a VP safety recall on this engine. And, have you ever experienced "safe mode" or, called also "limp mode" with these engines?

Just splashed her back from a fresh bottom paint: Volvo Penta TAMD75P-A

WOT, No Tabs, 250Gal Fuel, No Fresh Water, No Holding Tank, 1 Man, 2600RPMs / 32mph / 25gph / 32psi. Last Season with her loaded down with 400gal of fuel, 100gal of Fresh Water, No Holding Tank, 16 people & a full assortment of drinks for a long day, SeaDoo Spark Trix 3 on the Platform in 2'-3' swells she ran 2500rpms & 26mph and felt strong getting to those numbers while loaded down.

I did experience the starboard engine jumping into forward gear, local tech investigated and found the recall from Volvo hadn't been performed and they performed the wire/ plug re-work under warranty, hasn't been an issue since.

At the end of last season, one of engines fell into limp mode, code showed potentiometer, erased code, killed batteries @ the panel, non issue since.

This season I will have all plugs/ connections in the engine bay opened cleaned and hit with dye-electric as from my reading the issues that present many times are connection and voltage fluctuations.

All in all I am very happy and it is exactly what I was looking for, a 2 bed 2 bath floating condo, we boat 95% on the weekends of LOTO, and while its not the ocean I have seen many claim its worse.

At any rate on the craziest weekends of the season she cuts/ rides like a dream. I generally have 4-8 passengers on the front bow while under way and have yet to be concerned with their safety.

Thanks for the info. So glad to hear how much you enjoy your boat. Can you advise what years the 47 was manufactured? Do you know which years the 48 was manufactured?

I was looking at a Formula 48 on Lake Travis north of Austin Texas recently. Decided on a 40 PC. The 48 is listed on Yachtworld.
