41PC fuel level sensors and more...

Hey gang,

I am getting whacky fuel levels on my 41PC and I figured I may as well replace both of my sensors - this brings me to 2 questions. Have any of you done it and know the best way to get access to the sensors and secondly, we all know and love the beautiful wiring diagram Formula has for us... is there an actual boat diagram that shows where things are in a similar fashion? Thanks for any info!

I replaced both fuel senders, but on a 31pc and not a 41pc. Nevertheless, the following may help once you get in there if your wiring is the same. I also think I posted about this a few years ago, but here's what I remember.

First, I have no idea where your senders are located or how to access them - others will need to chime in on that. In a 2001 31pc (for those that may care in the future), the stbd sender is accessed under a horizontal covering within the stbd gunnel after you open the port seatback, just forward of the starboard step. The port sender is accessed through the deck under the cockpit sink cabinet through a circular hatch.

My senders (forgot the OEM manufacturer) had three wires - two up to the gauge, and one receiving power to the sender (perhaps red, perhaps green, I can't recall) with power flowing through a push in/out breaker in a rear panel. The replacement senders I used are WEMA/KUS SSS/SSL Reed switch American Standard 240-33 ohm senders, which have only two wires. https://kus-usa.com/product/sss-ssl-sender/

I pulled the old senders, measured them for length and then ordered the same length SSS senders from KUS. (If you want a built in "reserve reading", order an inch shorter.) I capped off the original power wires to the old senders, then permanently pulled the breaker at the rear panel. The new senders are powered from the gauge.

If I recall, the new KUS senders came with one black and one pink wire, and the original wires back up to the gauge were of different colors. KUS instructions include some odd instruction to install with pink to ground and black to the gauge -- but that connection was certainly not obvious to me. I defin itely recall stressing a bit over which wires to connect to which and researched this (see post #6 and following at https://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/633798-wiring-fuel-sending-unit.html) until I finally called KUS and got comfortable with the fact that it really made no difference - I believe there is something to that effect somewhere on the KUS site. But do call them to be absolutely sure as you don't want to be messing with incorrect wiring at your sender.

Made the connections and they have been working perfectly ever since.

On the port side I think, but not absolutely sure, that there is a hatch inside the portside seat when opened gives access to the sender. I think I looked in there once and saw the sender.
