40pc questions. Looking to purchase.

I am seriously looking at the 40pc years up to 2008. I don’t want the IPS because of the additional draft. My current boat draws 37” and I barely get in and out at low tide. I churn and bump bottom but it’s a soft mud bottom. It looks like the Yanmar diesels have a shallower draft and less maintenance/cost? Any opinions on that? I am currently in a 36ft boat with inboard V drives. My current boat is just too slow. I cruise at 20 to 22 mph getting about .75 mpg. I like the idea of cruising 25-30 mph getting over 1mpg. Does this sound reasonable for the 40pc? I boat mostly in the upper Potomac River just outside of DC. Channels are well marked but logs are a major issue for bending props. I also boat often at night so spotting floating logs are more difficult. For that reason the IPS scares me more. Would love to hear opinions on both sides.

Too bad we are geographically challenged. I am getting my 2002 41 PC ready for sale. She is a beauty and I am the 2nd owner. She was 1 1/2 when I bought her. She has been in my life a long time! Divergirl has twin 480 Volvo Penta diesels and cruises at about 28. She is a heavy boat and performs well in the open ocean. She is beamy, 13' 6 ", and has a lot of living space. I believe the draft is 29".

Good Luck!

What area are you in? I purchased my last boat in Ft. Lauderdale and drive her up the ICW to DC. Great excuse for a boat ride.

Do you know your fuel burn at 28mph?

Anthony75,
This is my first year of use with a 2006 PC40. I’ve been boating under 28 feet for decades but this boat takes the cake. Yanmar twin 440’s have treated me well. I avoided the pod drives for the same reason you have, the temptation of the joystick is hard to overlook, but every pod I considered for purchase appeared to need service, service and service. Yanmar is simple, easy care but you have to put in the routine maintenance, and make sure the previous owners did the same. She cruises beautifully at 28-30mph. Draws 3 feet. Takes the big water quite well (Cape Cod and Islands to Montaulk, NY), Good fuel efficiency, I don’t have exact gallons per hour but my rough calculation is not more than 30 gallons per hour at 28-29 Mph. Some interior cabin cosmetic issues with walls and cabinet laminate but nothing insurmountable. Comfortable and lots of amenities, I couldn’t be happier. Get a good survey so you know what needs to be done, and even then there are always surprises, but if the systems are all in good health you should be a happy boater. Good Luck!

Thanks for the review. Sounds like a great boat.
