27pc

Castines,

Thanks for the information about the generator battery. Now I have to figure out what to do. We went to a boat show this weekend and the wife now tells me she likes the 31PC better. OH-BOY I just cannot wait to call my salesperson on this one :D We will see what happens. Once again thanks to all who responded to my questions. I think this is great forum where much information and knowledge can be exchanged :D

John

The 31 is a great boat. I had a 27PC. Bought it in Nov of 04. Put in the water on April 28th 05. Sold it 3 months later and move up to the 31. Do yourself a favor. Go for the 31 PC ;D If the wifes on board, most of the battle if over.

Can anyone recommend to me which is a better engine/outdive combination? I have priced out the 31PC but I am not sure which engines to go with, the 6.2mx or the 496mags. There is about a $9,000(list price) difference :-[ I will be boating on primarily Lake Michigan. Can anyone advise me which way to go? I know the 496mags will guzzle the gas but I am concerned with the boat weight(14,000lbs). Any ideas or incite would be helpful. Also got any ideas how I can SCHMOOZE my salesman to go for the deal? ;D

John

I have the 6.2MX and it does very well, of course if you have the ability and option to do the big block 496 then go for it. Gas burn will be about the same but you will have a higher cruise speed as well as top speed. The 496 will take all the room available and will be a bit tight to move around it an service it. The 6.2MX will do fine, you will cruise at 30MPH and top in the mid 40s which is just fine for me. I had the boat loaded and had no compalints with performance.

Do you have a genset in yours, and if so do you still have room for maintenance in the engine compartment?

John

Yes, I have the genset and there is plenty of room to work. Not that I am a handy man, but I can get away with doing basic functions such as oil changes and tune ups...

Bigguns,

I would go for the 496.  I have an 01 31 and cruise at 32mph at 3200rpm loaded with the 7.4L 454's.  Here are the spec's on an 04 31PC,  Lighter boat at 11730.  2005 is when they got heavier.  Formula told me the extra weight comes in the top deck area.

LOA 34
Merc 6.2 MX MPI Bravo III
RPM    MPH  GPH  Range
1500    9      6     242
2000    10    11    145
2500    13    18    116
3000    22    22    167
3500    28    23    195
4000    36    34    175
4500    41    40    164
5000    45    47     156
5050    46    49    153

My choice would be 496's.  The book says Top Speed for 496's 48-51MPH.  6.2's 43-46 mph.

Any other questions ask away and someone should be able to answer. Bottom line, its what you want and what you can afford.

The only thing I found wrong with the 31pc, is be careful if you have to tow it, I looked at one before I bought my 27pc and with the wide beam, technically you had to have a permit to tow it in Fl. and you'd better have a serious truck.. other than that I'd have owned a 31 but I store my boat at home and tow everywhere I use it.

Just my 2 cents worth. Nick ::)

thanks Castines think I am going to make the deal on the 0427pc I went down and looked at looks to be in good shape 60hrs on engines(5.7). Had to weal and deal a little to get a decent trade on my boat and to get the 27 with a trailer, but everything is looking good.. Going back down to (baldknob)finalize deal in late march or early april, when the boat is cleaned and preped hopefully can get a water test in. One downside is it had bottom paint on it bad for looks and performance good for cleaning. Dont really know why since it was used in a inlad lake. Dealer must of talked the former owner into. Tried to get pics from salesman but I got we are having computer tech difficulties? After looking at boat I think he meant boat was really dirty in cockpit and needed cleaning. ;)

any one know what the hieght of the 27pc is on the trailer? Just want to make sure its under 13'6? When I tow it home I have to go through milwaukee to get back to the north pole. It has radar arch facing the stern.

I know I was just under 12.6 on the trailer. The only way to be safe is to measure when its on but yo should be okay.

I've got damn near the identical boat your looking at, and on the trailer mine stands 12'10" high, but that is going to vary a little.from trailer setup to trailer setup. make sure you allow for the horn, tv antenna and the anchor light that are mounted on top of the arch.

thanks sounds like I am going to have been careful when trailering talked the salemsman into a triple axle loadmaster for the boat. I drive trucks all the time that are 13'6 high ripped off a few telephone and cable wires usually just tree limbs ;D. How has the boat been for you any problems, I am hoping since this one is used some of the little things are fixed. the boat looks in good shape engines only have 60hrs on them.

The only thing I found wrong with mine(well actually 2 things) was 1st and formost, I hated the throttles/shifters and damn near killed my significant other trying to dock..the solution for me was I found a set of Keikheafer controls from a fastech and converted the boat over to them, something I was comfortable with, and the second was the generator water pickup fouls easily as it has no screen to weeds/etc from getting in it..But in all fairness to Formula, where we camp on the weekends is a fairly shallow spring fed run, so I'm not sitting in but waist deep water running the generator.
And yes ya gotta watch out for those low limbs, I bent my horn mount the first weekend I tried to take it out of my subdivision.
Other than that I love the boat, probably one of the smartest things I've done in boating.
