2000 280 ss port engine overheat

I have a 2000 280ss with BravoIII outdrives. Regularly maintained, outdrive service every year, tune up every 100 hours, very well kept. After about 30 minutes in the water running at 30 knots, starboard engine temp kept going up til the alarm sounded and I shut her off. Went for a dive to check obstruction, if any, on the outdrive. All seemed clean and clear. Im thinking possibly bad impeller, thermostat, or maybe water pump. Any suggestions?

Impeller for sure would be high on my list. When was the last time it was serviced ?

Once in a while you will get a "bag or something" caught on the outdrive and block water flow...but normally a few thrusts into reverse will fix that.

If you can put on trailer you could put muffs on her and check for flow...as the impeller is a bit of a pain to check. But that is what I would be checking !

I had an overheating problem with my 2005 BIII's. My mechanic found it to be the tube that connects the drive inlet through the gimbel housing. If salt water lays in it, which it commonly does, it corrodes the tube, it crushes and restricts water flow. I would only overheat over 3200 rpms. Mercruiser is well aware of the problem. Apparently it is very common because I know of five people having the same issue. Easiest fix was through hull fittings with sea strainers.
