STEPPED HULLS AND TRAILERS

We have a Formula 271 model year 2000 Fastech (5,500# weight) with a galvanized bunk trailer. After just 6 years of easy use, but in salt water, mechanic tells me the trailer is garbage and we need to buy new one.  Have called 5 different trailer dealers and  everyone has a different story. Worse yet, the stories contradict each other. For example: "be sure and get aluminum for minimum maintenance and not problem with a boat that heavy". Others say "aluminum not work for this heavy a boat".  Some say "get stainless steel disc brakes, others say no, need drum brakes because the disc brakes have more problems in salt water than drum brakes", etc., etc., etc.

Problem: I prefer the bunked trailer because of minimum maintenance, but with present, so called 'customized set up' by Sea Lion in NJ, we cannot slide boat off trailer without putting the Suburban into the salt water up to the rear tires.  [Have spoken to dealer in NJ and Sea Lion directly several times and no help.]  If not back that far down any ramp, the boat slides off about 4' and then the step in the hull gets caught on the front edge of rear bunks.  We have modified everyting we can to fix this, but to no avail.  Even put slanted/angled Teflon covers on rear bunks to allow the hull step to 'bounce over' the front edge of the bunk. No luck.

QUESTION: Can any one recommend a reasonably priced, intelligent trailer dealer in MD (prefer Eastern Shore) or WDC or Northern VA area? More importantly, who has a stepped hull boat and what is their trailer set up? Must i use rollers? There has got to be an easier, less wet way to get this boat in and out of the water.

LEONARD,
ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS CAN BE HAD BY CALLING LOADMASTER TRAILER COMPANY IN PORT CLINTON, OHIO. 1-800-258-6115. I AGREE THAT A BUNK TRAILER IS A MUST. LOADMASTER IS MODERATELY PRICED, AND CUSTOM MADE TO YOUR BOAT. COMES IN GALVANIZED OR PAINTED.
ALUMINUM TRAILERS ARE OK, BUT NOT CUSTOM FITTED TO YOUR HULL.
WHY IS YOUR TRAILER JUNK? IS IT A SINGLE AXLE THAT HAS A RATING LESS THAN YOUR BOAT? IS IT BECAUSE OF THE SALT WATER? LET US KNOW.

LEONARD,
THERE IS AN EAGLE CUSTOM TRAILER ON THE SITE UNDER BOATS FOR SALE, CHECK IT OUT. IT MAY WORK FOR YOU.

I've bought a number of trailer from Fastload in FL. So many they have asked me to become a dealer.

Your trailer is junk because: The salt has eaten the galvanized material off the surface and is eating away at the metal. The hardware is all rusted and ready to snap under load. The brakes are sticking and metal is seperating inside the drum causing the brakes to work sporadically....and the bunks were never set properly for the boat and cut with a hard "step" instead of a angled gradual slop of the bunk to allow the boat to rise above the step as it slides into the water.

I have a 2002 382 Formula: All Aluminum triple axle trailer with Stainless Steel hardware, Disc brakes, mounted spares, LED lights, Aluminum wheels, stepped bunks and forward guide bunks. The trailer has a 18,000lbs rated capacity. This is the setup you need but sized for your boat.

If your interested, I priced a trailer for a buddy this afternoon. If I can get another 1-2 ordered at the same time delivery to Richmond VA will be free and the manufacturer will discount these 5-10%. I assume your seeing prices in the $3,000-4,000 range.
