State to state - Trailering permits

As I have honed in on a 280SS, I will need to transport from Upstate NY to Detroit.

My question lies on towing permits. The beam on the new boat is 9'2", the big PIA seems to be Ohio, their limit is 8'6", and the last thing I want to be dealing with is getting stopped by a trooper in a company truck with a boat that's 8 inches wider than the limit. They require all kinds of paperwork.

Has anyone who tows a larger vessel gained a permit in New York, Ohio, or Michigan? I was thinking of just taking the risk, as the boat is only 28ft not 30+.

Any thoughts? Any experiences?

Thanks!
Rob

Rob,
Ohio is not the only one, all states have a 102 inch limit before permitting is required.
I will be very honest and tell you that I have hauled hundreds of over width loads and if it were me, I would not get a permit for a 9'2 inch width.
I pulled a 33 SS from Wisconsin to Pittsburgh, with no issues at all. I did not use the toll road because of the 10 foot limit, but used other major highways.
The toll road even has a 10 foot limit without a permit, so running that is no issue at all for you.
The trooper cannot hold both ends of the measuring tape, so if it comes down to it, adjust your end a little.
Please remember to have wheel bearings serviced before the trip. You never know when the last grease job was done.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Oops, It also had the wide beam. We took it slow and easy and did not have a problem or get stopped by law enforcement. Fyi. I had concerns about permits as you mentioned but had no issues. Good luck!

9'2" you'll be OK. I only had a permit 1 year when I towed my 370ss at 10'6" wide, height was always my fear at 14'2". My previous performance cats were 9'6" and never had an issue. With a V bottom, the width of the boat is also above where most cars are, so it doesn't feel as wide the closer to the ground.
