Shifter Upgrade

Home Aweigh II

New member
Finally finished one of the two winter projects I scheduled. Colder than usual winter, plus more snow this year put me way behind. This project went more smoothly than I expected one down and one to go, the Raymarine autopilot install is next.

That looks awesome, sure you will love them...much better than the older style.

Now we just need spring.

Are those Gaffrig? Where did u locate? They look awesome and ind. trim switches as opposed to the single for both drives

Home, what shifters did you originally have? How have you enjoyed the new Gaffrigs? Can't stand the factory Merc shifters on my 08 27 PC and have been considering this same upgrade.

The original shifters were Mercruiser factory installs. I wanted more control when docking. My slip on the Connecticut River is always effected by wind and a nasty current. Now I have the control I need. In short they work well.

Not Home Aweigh, but my 2 cents... If you have the factory Mercs, you have two levers controlling both shift and throttle. The 4 lever approach gives you separate shift and throttle levers. Short throw on the shift levers is sure and keeps your hand off the throttles preventing against over throttling when shifting. That independence is gold in tough docking conditions.

Thanks HA! I believe the panel dimensions are pretty universal but will measure to be sure in a few weeks. My Mercs are very stiff - a dock crusher waiting to happen. Disconnected cables last fall to check movement on both ends, and suspect the problem is my cables. But I figure if I'm going to do the hard part and replace those I might as well add the shifter upgrade as well. Still mulling and saving nickles.

I don't have the model # of the installed Gaffrig shifter, however it is black and from left to right it is configured with 2 shifters, 2 throttles and has 2 tilt switches on the first throttle.
