OMG THE FLIES?! How to fix?!

We like to anchor near shore and walk the beach around the bay - Essex, MD, and areas.
But for the last few times now, we've been OVERRUN and had to run for our very lives from hundreds of man eating flies.

I've basically hosed the boat down with bug stop - which works amazing at home. No effect.
I've used indoor air spray in the cabin - smells chemically fresh - no effect.
I tried those hanging traps with the scents - no effect.

the flies come at you with everything they've got and bite bite bite and bite and NOPE. Pull anchor. exit.

On shore if you soak yourself with 30% DEET and ruin your clothes and find cuts and scrapes in your skin you didn't even know you had, you can almost walk freely.

What is everyone doing? My next boat will have an 'indoor' area, but most boats are wide open to these little bastards.

I don't want a spray that 'confuses' bugs. If they land on me, i want them DEAD. But also prefer not to die of chemicals myself if possible.

thanks!

Here in the Fla Keys it seems some remote islands have a high population and some have none. We have some infested sand bars and some that are very pleasant. It seems without a helicopter spray rig you may not win.....
