New to Formulas

Hi everyone,

I am in the Army stationed in upstate New York and have 17 1/2 years in. I am looking at getting a boat in the next couple years and I know I want a Formula. I drove my buddy's 1994 that has a 502 EFI and man that thing was awesome to drive. I am between a Fas Tech 353 or a 330/350 SS for the family, I been on a couple 312s and 353s and loved them. I have yet to be on or see a 330/350 SS except for online and the Formula brochures. I have 2 kids and when they come and visit I would like something I can take them out on the river in upstate NY or the the big lakes in North Carolina when I move back there. I found this forum looking for pictures and also info on the boats. I plan on larking around for awhile to learn everything I can.

First I would like to Thank you for defending this great Nation.

As for the boat, The 353 and 330SS are two different boats, the 353 is more of a day boat with a cabin for facilities use, designed for speed seating for 6. The 330SS is a great family boat with a large cockpit, table, Fridge, kid friendly in the sense of a large head and shower though on the small side but useable, seating for 10-12 and room for Dive tanks and gear. Not as fast as the 353 nor is the hull designed to take the waves as would the 353.

You will need to decide which is more appealing Fast and less cockpit space or slightly slower and lots of cockpit space and will you ever over night on it?

I think that the 330SS gets you the best of both worlds. The 350SS is just a few feet longer and slightly wider beam and higher price tag (newer).

Welcome aboard and good luck in your endever.

And a HUGE Thanks For Defending US.

Thanks for your service and for defending our freedom. I'm more of the cruiser type so cant provide much insight, but like you I knew I wanted a Formula.

Good luck in your search, you'll get plenty of good info here.

Be safe and God Bless.

EMSDiver, welcome to the forum and a Big Thank You for your personal sacrifice in defending our country. How far upstate in New York are you? I am about 20 miles North of West Point but if we are talking Fort Drum you are miles an miles away. Let me know your location and maybe I can be of assistance to you. In any event, lots of assistance is readily available here on the forum, so ask any questions which may be on your mind. Plenty of manufacturers have websites but I cannot imagine anyone else with the solid dedication which is exhibited here on a daily basis. Good luck with your quest to own a Formula.

PS: Keep the first mate involved, it makes the whole boating experience more fun.

Thank you all for the welcome and thank you for the military support.

F3504x4ps Oh i know the boats I listed are totally different. I would like to find a boat that I can speed around in and also be able to take the family and friends out on. I am not looking for any crazy speeds, we are talking 60-70 mph max. If the 330/350 SS can do those speeds with some engine mods then I might go that route. The other thing is I need a boat that I can trailer to and from the water so that is why I am looking at the 353 in that aspect. I do like what you said about the Sun Sport being so universal.

PT G when you say first mate I assume you mean the wife, I dont need to worry about that since I am separated in the middle of a divorce. Also I am in Alexandria Bay NY so I am about 4 hours away from you.

Like I said I have already driven my buddies 1994 271 SR1 and loved it and have been on the water in some 312s and 353s. I need to get on the water in a 330/350 SS and then I will be able to figure out which one will be better for me.

I am still reading up on the forum and seeing what people have done to their boats and what problems people have been having.

Hi EMSDiver,

We just bought a 2002 330SS w/ 496Mags. Plenty of room for day-boating and over-nighting, and we still hit 60mph. So far, it is a perfect compromise boat between the go-fast style I like and the cruiser style she likes. It gives us the best of both worlds.

Keep us posted on your hunt for the boat. The search is part of the fun.

Stay safe!

tru2form very nice looking boat and not a bad price for the year. I still have a couple more years before I can buy, getting ready to go back over sometime next year. So that will give me time to pay off bills and save up for the boat.

kai330 do you tow your 330SS at all and if you do how is it behind the truck?

I am use to towing goose neck 20-40 foot horse trailers so the length or weights not the issue its the width.

Any other advice anyone has would be great as well.

Thank you all for the help.

EMSDiver,

I dug up a couple pics we took of "Siriusly Kai". Hopefully I attached them properly...

The boat is a 2002 330SS that has never seen salt water. Evryone I have spoken with says to avoid salt water boats if at all possible. We're spoiled here in Michigan, we're surrounded by thousands of square miles of fresh water.

The pup is a black Labrador. And quite a handful at 6 months, too!

Nice, I have heard the same thing to stay away from boats that had raw salt water cooling. Here in upstate New York we have the St. Lawrence river and lake Ontario. I will get the Fresh Water Cooling System for the boat unless the one I find already has it. If/when I go back to North Carolina we have a few lakes to run in and there is also the outer banks in the ocean. That is the main reason for the Fresh Water Cooling System so I can have more options where to run it. No matter what I will wash the boat every time I take it out of the water that is why I need something I can trailer.

Also looking at the 400 SS as well since most of my boating will be on the ST Lawrence River and lake Ontario and the inter coastal ways in North Carolina.

Remember your manifolds and risers are raw water cooled, unless your go with a Merc 5.7 or 6.2 engine.

I will keep that in mind thanks.

I posted a thread about the 330/350/370/400 SS in the SS forum. Just taking in consideration on where most of my boating will be and it will be ocean once I leave NY.
