New to Formula

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am Bob from Orlando, Fl. I am in the process of buying a 1997 271 Fastech 502 Mag Mpi. 500hrs. It is a one-owner boat. Well maintained but does need a lot of TLC. Will do a valve job, check the intake for corrosion, and add closed cooling. Bilge needs a good cleaning, hull needs polishing/wax. The headliner in the cuddy is starting to fall. I will have a trailer built for it. All in all, good shape for a twenty year old boat.

Looking forward to interacting with all of you.

Sounds like you have a nice boat, and after a bit of work be really nice.

I would not recommend putting closed cooling on the boat with that many hours. If it was a fresh water boat it would clog up the cooling system in no time and a salt water boat does not stand a chance

Welcome, Bob from Orlando, FL

Hopefully, you got a good deal to make your TLC worth while. Got any pictures to share?

Adding closed cooling to engine that is already well into its useful life can present problems , as AllDodge mentioned. I have done that, and if the engines have been used only in fresh water, then you have a chance. If they have been used in salt water, then probably not.

If you are set on adding closed cooling, you could do an iron flush (similar to a radiator flush on a car/truck) to get rid of the sediment in the block. Also, if you are doing a valve job, you could pop out the core plugs on the engine block to remove any sand/sediment that has accumulated in the block.

I replaced the headliner on my 330SS . . . kind of a bear to do, since Formula puts the headliner in the deck 'half' of the boat before they assemble the deck to the hull.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will be going over everything closely after I get it home. I am getting it on the 21st. I just have a few photos of the boat from when I looked at it. They aren't very good photos. I will get some better ones after I bring it home, and post them. Can't wait.

Thanks for the welcome.

Bob
