Mercury DTS "sync"

Can someone explain the functionality of the sync feature on the Digital Throttle Control (DTS). I've read it syncs the rpm's of the two engines, but isn't that what "single throttle" feature does?
What does it do, and when would you use it, and for that matter, when would you not want to use it?

Single throttle control is used like in heavy seas. You need to be able to speed up then slow down for the waves. Selecting single control allows one control (closest to you) to control both motors. Under single control the motors may not be in sync.

Sync makes both motors stay at same rpm

that seems like they are really splitting hairs. I would think single throttle control of 2+ engines means they would always sync RPM.
