Do I have a bravo 1 or Bravo 1X??

Hi Everyone

Looking at buying a 2004 Fastech 271 with the Merc 496. I understand that Merc realized the standard bravo 1 could not handle the torque of the 496 Mag HO very well and initially there were some drive failures, shortly after which they came out with the Bravo 1X which had the diesel upper with the standard bravo 1 lower which supposedly proved much more durable. Would a 2004 with the 496 Mag HO have the Bravo 1X as standard? Or at that point in time was it still an upgrade?

It's the weight of the boat which makes the decision on which drive a motor is paired with. The heavier the boat the more load is placed on the drive. A 425hp 495ftlb 496 or 415hp 519ftlb 502, the 502 has more torque, and torque is what brakes things. If you know the drive serial number it can be looked up. Most dealers will look it up and let ya know if someone here doesn't
