Cleaning Chrome Drive Parts

I purchased a fresh water boat last summer. The props and chrome parts on the drives are all coated with something that is not the easiest to clean. Some of it has started to come off with normal use but a lot remains. I'm thinking something like CLR might work, does anyone else have any suggestions? You can see on the right drive shower tube were it comes off pretty easily (I scraped it with my fingernail) but not so much on the tie bar and props.

I like to use 3M Marine metal restorer and polish for jobs like this. A 00 Grade wire wool and away you go. Good as new.

I used regular store bought white vinegar. After about a 20 minute soak, scale wiped right off.
