Antifreeze everywhere

I left the slip last night at about five thirty, and headed down river on the Columbia for a nice drive. About 30 miles out of Portland, I turned around and headed back. Fifteen miles later disaster struck! My warning siren started to go off and I shut down. When I opened the hatch, there was steam everywhere and the entire contents of my CWC system was in the bottom of my bilge. I spoke with the dealer, and he is on his way to pick up the boat, but he thinks I might have sucked a bag into my impeller, or a hose popped off. Either way, my motor got to about 240 on the temp gage. Don't know if it caused any major damage to anything yet or not. All this with only 8.1 hours on the boat. Its the 8.1 Volvo GXi. :'(

That is a serious bummer. Hopefully you have a service dept at your dealer that will step up and make everything right. Of course he could be right about the bag but I would lean alot more towards something not being installed right from the beginnng based on the low hours of your boat.

Keep us updated on what they tell you. I am very curious to see how they handle it. Good luck!

Very disappointing, a installation flaw would seem like the most likely culprit. Takes all the fun out of a new boat :( :(

I just got the call from the dealer and they say that my head gasket failed. Could have been from extreme heat or blowing could have caused extreme heat. Either way, they will fix it by next week. That explains why there was antifreeze on one side of the engine only. He says it is under warranty, but that formula guard only pays for 100 of my 800 tow bill. Should have joined SEATOW!! It is worth the 149 a year for the membership.

Well, you are safe and the boat should be in good running condition in a week or so. Happy to hear that it is covered under warranty.

SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR ENGINE. I HAVE BEEN WONDERING WHY MY STARBOARD ENGINE IS LOOSING A LITTLE ANTIFREEZE. ADDED ABOUT A GALLON IN 158 HRS. READ SOMEWHERE ON BOATERED THAT 8.1'S HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HEAD GASKETS BLOWING OUT BETWEEN CYLINDERS, AND CAUSING THE ANTIFREEZE TO BE CONSUMED IN THE ENGINE. MOST OF THE PROBLEMS WERE OUT OF WARRANTY ISSUES, BUT STILL I WONDER. LET US KNOW ABOUT FORMULA GUARD WARRANTY. I'M CURIOUS IF IT IS AS GOOD AS THEY SAY. BEST OF LUCK, AND HOPE YOU ARE BACK ON THE WATER SOON.

I would be extrememly surprised to find out the head gasket was the cause, more likely the head gasket failed after something caused it to overheat. With the low hours your boat has it would be very unlikely for a head gasket to fail. Those engines are built on an assembly line using preset tools, no way that head gasket was not torqued to its correct spec. Much more likely some hose or something was not installed properly and it blew off. Causing loss off cooling untill head gasket blew which was all the steam you saw. Give it a vert thorough look over when you get it back

I doubt very seriously that 240 did any damage to your engine. Sorry to hear about your troubles. How do you like the Volvo? Is that the 375 hp, or the 420? I'm thinking of dropping one in my 22 Donzi.

The dealer decided to replace the entire engine. Volvo shipped it last week and on friday they started to put it in. Should be back on the water by middle of next week. We have been having mid seventies days for the last week and I am missing them. :'(

Mljjjjjj , there will be more warm days........Thank Neptune that you have a good dealer and excellent product support. Sounds like a new engine was the way to go. ERIC
