1996 280ss-port side motor problem

Bought 1996 280SS last summer (480hrs), used all summer through October with no issues. Due to the age and the boat being new to us, we had a local reputable marina take it over the winter to make a few upgrades, maintenance (oil change, replace impellers & such, and give it a inspection. They had it most of the winter due to waiting on parts, but checking in a few times said the boat checked out great! The day we were heading out to pick it up, we received a call, that during the test run that morning the port side motor threw a bearing rod. They put a loaner motor in and are rebuilding ours…. Two hours into our boat ride the loaner motor started cutting out & oil pressure dropped. Question, 2 failed port motors coincidence or is there some independent causing the problem? If it’s a separate problem, would love to figure out before our rebuild is back.

If it was a full complete drop in as nothing was removed from original motor and used loaner, then that would be unheard of. If the loaner used things like oil cooler, filter housing and such then that could be the cause

I think it's important to see if they reused anything from your old motor. I'm going to guess that they may have because losing to engines to oiling issues seems like a bit of a coincidence. Also since they had just done an oil change during the off season, I'm curious if someone screwed something up in the remote oil filter setup or dropped something into a line.

OK - what is wrong with this picture?

'Test run that morning' . . . 'bearing rod' . . . 'were able to put another engine in' . . .

All this in one day ?

Did so without notifying you?

To clarify, they called that morning about the bearing rod & let us know they “would” put a loaner in so we wouldn’t be without for the whole season. They had the loaner in within a week or so.

It was a motor only drop in, everything else was from our boat. Runs great until it’s warmed up (then cuts out & oil pressure drops). They were saying carburetor & changed their mind. Now saying ignition coil.

I’m not convinced. There was oil (no smell like gasoline ) film when dropped in the water.

Check if it has to much oil. If it has to much oil it will start to foam when warmed up and running. Once it starts to foam then there is air being moved thru the oil canals instead of oil
