1993 merc 454 replacement experiences/options

just had my 252br go down with water in all 4 port side cylinders. current motor has 1100+ hrs so looking into replacement options. currently looking at a 454 mag 385hp. Has anyone gone this route? what was involved in going efi, and is there a better option? other than brand new power, not wanting that much investment financially in this particular boat. thanks
 
You can go 454 or 502 and things will bolt up. Can go carb or MPI, and if going MPI and MEFI 1 thru 3, then it will be plug and play if you get a full drop in. If your block is rebuildable then could buid some more power out of it
